I. (a) Obtain and discuss the dispersion relation for the lattice vibrations in one dimensional
diatomic lattice. (15)

II. What are brillouin zones? Also, construct the brillouin zones for the B.C.C. lattice. (15)

III. Discuss the energy loss of fast particles inside the solids. (15)

IV. Prove that the energy spectrum of solids consist of energy bands using Kronig-Penny

V. What are nanomaterials. Why the properties of nanomaterials are different as compared to
their bulk counterpart. Also, discuss their potential applications. (15)

VI. What are fermi surfaces? On what factors the shape of fermi surfaces depend and also,
draw the fermi surfaces of Au and Cu. (15)

VII. Discuss the properties of holes in detail. (15)

VIII. Describe powder method of X-ray diffraction and explain how it is used to determine
the crystal structure of the given material. (15)

(i) Explain De Haas-Van Alphen effect
