Paper - P 2.1.2

Sem.-III

(SYLL-DEC-2019)

[Time Allowed 2 Hours] [Maximum Marks: 60]

Note: Attempt any four questions. All questions carry equal marks.

1. What is meant by mass defect, binding energy and binding energy per nucleon? Discuss the
relation between binding energy and mass defect. Explain the variation of binding energy per
nucleon with mass number.

2. What is magnetic moment of nucleus? Derive the expression for it and describe one
method for the measurements of nuclear magnetic moment

3. Discuss the neutron proton scattering at low energy. What information can you drive
about the nature of nuclear forces from this?

4. Why nuclear shell model was proposed? Explain single particle shell model and discuss how
inclusion of spin orbit interaction could explain all magic number.

5. What is the working principle of a Pelletron accelerator? Explain the different parts of this
accelerator with diagram and discuss how a charged particle accelerated through it.

6. What is meant by Q value of a nuclear reaction? Derive an expression for it in terms of

kinetic energies of product and incident particles and their masses.

7. What is Coulomb scattering? Derive the expression for theoretical and experimental
scattering cross section in case of inelastic Coulomb scattering.

8. Discuss various types of neutron sources. Explain the absorption and moderation of neutrons
in a neutron reactor.

9. Answer all questions

(a) What is nuclear spin and parity, Find the nuclear spin and parity for nucleus
having 7 protons and 7 neutrons using nuclear shell model configuration.

(b) Nuclear binding energy is more than atomic binding energy. Why ?

(c) Calculate the average binding energy per nucleon of 4He nucleus. Given mHe
(mass of helium nucleus) = 4.002643 amu, mp (mass of proton) = 1.007825 amu
and mn (mass of neutron)= 1.008665 amu.
(d) What is the significance of asymmetric term in semi-empirical mass formula?

(e) Electrons are accelerated to 20 GeV in a linear accelerator. Calculate the

difference in m/s between the speed of light and electron’s speed.

(f) What are stripping and pickup reactions? Give one example of each.

(g) What are tensor forces?

(h) Comment on non-conservation of parity in beta decay.

(i) What is significance of non-zero quadruple moment of deuteron?

(j) Comment on thermal fission reactor and fast fission reactor.
