Connection 6
The following content is described in this chapter:
● Network types
● Connection to the source (connecting terminals, required accessories)
● Inputs and outputs of the control unit
● Connection of transfer switching equipment (control unit, required accessories)

6.1 Network types

The transfer switching equipment can be connected to different types of network.
● Three-phase 4-wire network with 3 phases and neutral conductor (3PH + N)
● Three-phase 3-wire network with 3 phases and no neutral conductor (3PH)

Note
3KC3 transfer switching equipment is suitable for any type of network up to a maximum 4-
wire network when the power supply is connected externally. It is therefore also suitable for a
single-phase network with 1 phase and a neutral conductor.

It is possible to use the transfer switching equipment for switching between any two networks
in accordance with the standard IEC 60947-6-1.
It is also possible to use 3KC3 transfer switching equipment as a load transfer switch for
switching between two loads in accordance with the standard IEC 60947-3.

NOTICE
Damage to the device
The product is designed for a rated impulse withstand voltage Uimp of 6 kV for the main
circuit. The control circuit of the 3KC3 transfer switching equipment is designed for 4 kV
and the control circuit of the 3KC6 transfer switching equipment is designed for 2.5 kV.
The dual power supply (DPS) accessory is designed for a rated impulse withstand voltage
Uimp of 4 kV, and the autotransformer accessory is designed for 2.5 kV.
If the auxiliary conductor terminal accessory is used with the transfer switching equipment
installed on a grounded base plate, the rated impulse withstand voltage Uimp of the transfer
switching equipment is reduced to 2.5 kV!
When using the product in an application in which overvoltages of > 4 kV or > 2.5 kV can
occur, suitable measures must additionally be taken to limit these overvoltages to no more
than 4 kV or 2.5 kV, respectively.

1 x 3NW7013

Note
The F1 fuses must be installed as closely as possible to the tap.

It is also possible to connect the sources without dual power supply (DPS) for the power
supply of the transfer switching equipment. However, if one of the sources is not available,
switching is only ever possible in one direction, namely in the direction of the available
source.
● If only source I is available, the transfer switching equipment can only be switched in the
direction of position I (II -> 0 and 0 -> I).
● If only source II is available, the transfer switching equipment can only be switched in the
direction of position II (I -> 0 and 0 -> II).
This would make it impossible to reach the OFF position using the control unit if one source
fails. Use of the dual power system (DPS) accessory therefore offers complete reliability, as
it makes it possible to switch to all three positions when either source I or source II is
available and is recommended for this reason.

6.2 Connecting the main circuit

The following chapter describes the connection options for the 3KC3 and 3KC6 transfer
switching equipment.

NOTICE
System damage
System damage is possible if the equipment is not installed properly.
Connect the two networks with phase equality.
Tighten all terminals. Unassigned box terminals must also be tightened.

6.2.1 Connecting terminals of the transfer switching equipment

The main circuit is connected to 3KC3 and 3KC6 transfer switching equipment by means of
box terminals. The box terminals for 3KC3 and 3KC6 transfer switching equipment are
identical. The box terminals of the transfer switching equipment have two openings.

Upper opening of box terminal

Figure 6-9 Upper opening of box terminal

The upper opening of the box terminal must be used primarily for the main circuit.
Lower opening of box terminal

Figure 6-10 Lower opening of box terminal

Accessories are connected to the lower opening of the box terminal. It is not suitable for
connecting the main circuit.

6.2 Connecting the main circuit

The lower opening can be used for the connection of either an auxiliary conductor terminal
(3KC9622 - 2) or a bridging bar (3KC9618 – 2: 40 A to 125 A or 3KC9618 – 3: 160 A).
If a bridging bar and an auxiliary conductor terminal are both used simultaneously, the
auxiliary conductor terminal must be connected to the upper opening of the box terminal. In
this case, the upper opening of the box terminal which is assigned to the auxiliary conductor
terminal can no longer be used for connecting the main circuit.

6.2.2 Load connection

6.2.2.1 Load connection with 3KC3 transfer switching equipment

The following figures show the two fundamentally possible arrangements for the connected
load. This can be connected to either the top or the bottom of the 3KC3 transfer switching
equipment.

6.2.2.2 Load connection with 3KC6 transfer switching equipment

In the case of 3KC6 transfer switching equipment, the load connection is already determined
by the internally wired connection to the control unit and to the motor operator.
If the 3KC6 transfer switching equipment is mounted with the motor operator on the right, the
main circuit must be connected at the bottom. This is due to the internally wired connection
to the control unit and to the motor operator.
The neutral conductor must also be connected to the main terminals on either the right or the
left.

Figure 6-12 Arrangement for load connection with 3KC6 transfer switching equipment, motor
operator on the right

If the main circuit connection must be made on top, the 3KC6 transfer switching equipment
must be rotated such that the motor operator is on the left.

Figure 6-13 Arrangement for load connection with 3KC6 transfer switching equipment, motor
operator on the left

6.2.3 Arrangement of the sources

In the case of the 3KC6 transfer switching equipment, the source on switch I is normally the
prioritized source. However, as the prioritized source (I or II) can be changed at the inputs of
3KC6, the main power supply network can be connected anywhere.

6.2.4 Connection of the transfer switching equipment to the main circuit

The connection of the transfer switching equipment to the main circuit is described in the
following section.
To connect the 3KC3 and 3KC6 transfer switching equipment properly, you must first mount
the bridging bar accessory. The steps listed below describe the mounting of the bridging bar
and the connection to the power supply systems.

6.2.4.1 Connecting the bridging bar on the load side

WARNING
Hazardous voltage!
Ensure there is no live voltage before beginning to mount the bridging bars.

If the transfer switching equipment is used for switching between two networks (in
accordance with IEC 60947-6-1), a bridging bar must be used on the load side.

Note
However, if the 3KC3 transfer switching equipment is used as a load transfer switch for
switching between 2 loads (in accordance with IEC 60947-3), a bridging bar must be
mounted on the input side.

The bridging bar is not included in the scope of supply and must be ordered as an
accessory. You can find more detailed information on the bridging bar in the section titled
Bridging bar (Page 91).

6.3.4 Installing and connecting an autotransformer (400 V / 230 V)

The 3KC3 transfer switching equipment requires a supply voltage of 230 V AC to supply the
transfer switching equipment. The autotransformer (3KC9624–1) converts the voltage of
400 V AC that is active between the phases to the required voltage of 230 V AC.
In the case of the 3KC6 transfer switching equipment, the autotransformer can be used to
connect the necessary rated voltage of 230 V AC to the main circuit connections of the
3KC6 transfer switching equipment in a three-phase 3-wire network without neutral
conductor (3PH).

7.2.1.1 Functions of the power supply inputs of the 3KC3 transfer switching equipment
Inputs 101/102 and 201/202
The 3KC3 transfer switching equipment comes with two independent power supply inputs,
101/102 and 201/202.
● A power supply must be applied at inputs 101/102 in order to be able to switch the
transfer switching equipment in the direction of position I (II → 0 and 0 → I).
● A power supply must be applied at inputs 201/202 in order to be able to switch the
transfer switching equipment in the direction of position II (I → 0 and 0 → II).
Use of the dual power system (DPS) accessory offers complete reliability, as it makes it
possible to switch to all three positions when either source I or source II is available.
Alternatively, an external uninterrupted voltage supply can be connected to the network.

7.2 Functions of the inputs and outputs

7.2.1.2 Technical specifications of the power supply inputs

The power supply must be within the following ranges:
● 220 – 240 V AC ± 20 % (176 – 288 V AC)
● 45 – 65 Hz
Current input:
● 0.1 mA permanent (electronics)
● Inrush current: Peak value < 25 A with duration < 50 ms
Permissible cable cross-section:
● Minimum: 0.5 mm²
● Maximum: 2.5 mm² with solid cable and 1.5 mm² with stranded cable

7.2.1.3 Functions of the control inputs of the 3KC3 transfer switching equipment
The 3KC3 transfer switching equipment has three control inputs (pins 313 – 315). Pin 317 is
used as the common control terminal for the control inputs.

Pin 313 - O: Command for switching to position 0

Closing of this contact has the result that the transfer switching equipment is switched to the
0 position. Before this command can be activated, pin 313 must be closed with pin 317 and
the following conditions must be fulfilled:
● The cover is closed and
● Pins 314 and 315 are not connected with pin 317, as the switching commands for the
switch to position I and position II have a higher priority than the switching command for
position 0.
In addition, continuous closure of pins 313 and pin 317 results in the selection of continuous
operation logic. If these pins are not closed, impulse logic is selected.

Pin 314 - II: Command for switch to position II

Closing of this contact has the result that the transfer switching equipment is switched to the
II position. This command is activated if the following requirements are met:
● The cover is closed and
● Contacts 314 and 317 are closed and
● Contact 315 is not closed with 317 at the same time.

7.2.2.1 Functions of the inputs of the 3KC6 transfer switching equipment

Pin 207: Control terminal for inputs 208 – 210

Input 207 is used as the control terminal for inputs 208 – 210.

Pin 208: Command for switching to position 0

Closing of this contact has the result that the transfer switching equipment is switched to the
0 position. Before this command can be activated, pin 208 must be closed with pin 207 and
the following conditions must be fulfilled:
● The cover is closed and
● The sources are available as described below:
– If the transfer switching equipment is in position I, at least source II must be available.
– If the transfer switching equipment is in position II, at least source I must be available.
When the command is active, the transfer switching equipment also changes to the fault
state (warning LED is illuminated) and automatic operation via the integrated control unit is
deactivated. The "Auto" LED remains unchanged (illuminated if the cover is closed).
The following steps must be performed in order to deactivate the command, rectify the fault
state and reactivate automatic mode:
● Open the connection between pins 207 and 208 and
● Open the cover and close it again, or connect pin 207 to pin 210 for > 2 seconds and then
disconnect it again (also possible via remote operation).
After this, the warning LED must be extinguished and automatic mode must be reactivated
as soon as the cover is closed.

Pin 209: Selection of source priority

If contact 209 is open, source I has a higher priority.
Closing this contact with control terminal 207 results in source II being prioritized.
Please note that the priority setting at pin 209 only has an effect when the fourth DIP switch
is in the "G" position (with priority). Changes to the DIP switches do not take effect until the
cover is opened and closed, see section titled Step 2: Setting DIP switches (Page 81).

7.3 Remote mode

The switching behavior of an auxiliary switch is shown in the figure below.

Figure 7-24 Switching behavior of auxiliary switch

7.3 Remote mode

The remote mode of the 3KC3 and 3KC6 transfer switching equipment is made possible by
inputs 313 – 317 on 3KC3 and by inputs 207, 208 and 210 on 3KC6.
● With both 3KC3 transfer switching equipment and 3KC6 transfer switching equipment,
remote mode is started by closing the cover.
● In the case of 3KC6 transfer switching equipment, the control unit is deactivated by
closing inputs 207 and 210. Closing inputs 207 and 208 switches the transfer switching
equipment to the 0 switch position.
With 3KC3 transfer switching equipment, there are two control logics for the inputs:
● Impulse logic
To select this logic, pins 313 and 317 must not be connected continuously.
● Continuous operation logic
This logic is selected by a continuous connection of pins 313 and 317.

7.3.1 Impulse logic

The figure below shows an example for the control logic of the 3KC3 transfer switching
equipment in the case of impulse logic:

Figure 7-25 Impulse logic (transfer times and switching time delays are not included in the figure).

The 3KC3 transfer switching equipment is switched to a position by an impulse and remains
in this position until a new impulse occurs:
● A switching command must be active for longer than 60 ms for the transfer switching
equipment to switch.
● The switching command to position I and the switching command to position II have a
higher priority than the switching command to position 0. If the switching command to
position I is issued at the same time as the switching command to position II, the transfer
switching equipment remains in the current position, as the switching command is
ignored.
● To select impulse logic, inputs 313-317 (switch position 0) must not be continuously
closed.

7.3.2 Continuous operation logic

The figure below shows an example for the control logic of the 3KC3 transfer switching
equipment in the case of continuous operation logic:

Figure 7-27 Continuous operation logic (transfer times and switching time delays are not included in
the figure)

The following must be observed here:

● To select continuous operation logic, inputs 313 and 317 (switch position 0) must be
continuously closed.
● The switching command to position I and the switching command to position II have a
higher priority than the switching command to position 0.
● Switching commands I and II have the same priority. The command that is received first (I
or II) has priority as long as the command remains active. If the command for the switch
to position I is issued at the same time as the command for the switch to position II, the
transfer switching equipment remains in the current position and one switching command
is ignored.
● If switching commands I and II are not closed, the transfer switching equipment switches
to the 0 position.

10.1 Fault rectification

The warning LED flashes. • If the transfer switching equipment has been operated more fre-
quently than 10 times in one minute, it changes to the protection
function. In this case, the transfer switching equipment is not
available for one minute and the warning LED flashes. It then re-
sets itself and the warning LED is extinguished.
• The warning LED flashes for a few seconds during autoconfigura-
tion.
• Under normal circumstances, the warning LED must be off.
The warning LED is illumi- • Check that contact 208 (switching command for position 0) is not
nated. connected to control terminal 207. If this is the case, the transfer
switching equipment is in a fault state. Perform the following steps
in order to rectify the fault state and reactivate automatic mode:
– Open the connection between pins 207 and 208 and
– Open the cover and close it again, or connect pin 207 to pin
210 for > 2 seconds and then disconnect it again (also possible
via remote operation).
After this, the warning LED must be extinguished and automatic
mode must be reactivated as soon as the cover is closed.
• Under normal circumstances, the warning LED must be off.
"Auto" LED is not illuminated. • The "Auto" LED indicates automatic mode. The transfer switching
equipment is in automatic mode when the cover is closed and in-
put 210 (inhibition of automatic mode) is open.
• Check that the cover of the transfer switching equipment is closed.
Only then the transfer switching equipment is in automatic mode
and the "Auto" LED is illuminated.
• Check that automatic mode is not deactivated, that is, that contact
210 is not connected to control terminal 207.
• The "Auto" LED is also extinguished after autoconfiguration, as
settings have been carried out on DIP switches A-B. The "Auto"
LED does not light up until the cover has been closed, or opened
and closed again.
• Check that the transfer switching equipment is supplied with pow-
er, that is, that at least one connected source is available (can also
be seen from the LED to indicate availability).
• If the fault state "Source x is available; the LED to indicate availa-
bility of source x is not illuminated however" is active, follow the
procedure described above to rectify the fault.
The "Auto" LED flashes • The "Auto" LED flashes for a few seconds during autoconfigura-
tion. It is then extinguished.

10.2 Regular service and maintenance

This chapter describes the procedure and intervals for service and maintenance.

WARNING
Hazardous voltage!
The equipment must only be serviced and maintained by qualified personnel. For the
purpose of the safety information in these operating instructions, a "qualified person" is
someone who is authorized to energize, ground, and tag equipment, systems, and circuits
in accordance with established safety procedures.

WARNING
Use of megohmmeter
3KC6 only: The use of a megohmmeter is prohibited on 3KC6 transfer switching
equipment, as the terminals are connected to the internal prewired power supply and line
monitoring.

Recommended maintenance/inspection intervals and tests

We recommend actuating the 3KC3 and 3KC6 transfer switching equipment at least once a
year in the following sequence: I - 0 - II - 0 – I.
This should be done both in manual operation and in automatic mode on the 3KC6 and in
remote mode on the 3KC3.
In addition, all connections should be tested at least once a year to make sure they are tight.
To do this, proceed as follows:
● Check the tightening torque of the connecting screws
● Visual inspection of all cables
● Visual inspection of accessories and their connections

Applications 13
The application areas for the 3KC3 and 3KC6 transfer switching equipment are described in
this chapter. The innovative solutions offered by the transfer switching equipment for
complex source requirements are described here.
An appropriate, separate transfer control device that is also suitable for transfers between a
network and a generator must be used with the 3KC3 transfer switching equipment for the
purpose of source monitoring and control. The 3KC6 transfer switching equipment is suitable
for transfers between two networks but is not designed for a generator, as it cannot control
and start the generator. Nevertheless, this chapter also discusses the network/generator
applications, as this can be implemented using the 3KC3 transfer switching equipment
combined with a suitable transfer control device.
The symbols shown in the circuit diagrams have the following meaning:

Symbol Explanation

Transfer switching equipment with the switches P1 and P2

Load

CL = critical load

NCL = non-critical load

The following tables show the behavior of the transfer switching equipment. The availability
of the sources (transformers or generators) is described by the following numbers:
● 1 = source available
● 0 = source not available
● x = source availability not defined as it is insignificant.

3KC3 and 3KC6 transfer switching equipment

Manual, 10/2017, L1V30368969103A-01 115
Applications

The switching states of the transfer switching equipment are described as follows:
● P1 = P1 switch closed
● P2 = P2 switch closed
● P3 = P3 switch closed, etc.
● x = insignificant (transfer switching equipment can be in any one of the three switching
states I, 0 or II).
The power supply of the loads is described as follows:
● OFF = Load is not supplied
● ON = Load is supplied

Advantages of the 3KC6 series:

● Plug and play solutions
● Compactness of the transfer switching equipment
● Reduced number of products through all-In-one solutions
● Installed mechanical and electrical interlockings

The sequence tables below apply for the transfer switching equipment with an electronic
module (3KC6) and the 3KC3 transfer switching equipment with an appropriate, separate
transfer control device.

Transfer with T1 (kVA) > T2/G (kVA)

With this application, the power of source I is greater than that of source II
(T1 (kVA) > T2/G (kVA). A generator and a transformer are usually used for this. However,
with this application, the transfer switching equipment can also switch between two
transformers. The load is divided into a critical and a non-critical load here.

ESD guidelines B
In this chapter, you will find the ESD guidelines that must be observed when handling the
3KC3 and 3KC6 transfer switching equipment.

B.1 Electrostatic sensitive devices (ESD)

ESD components are destroyed by voltage and energy far below the limits of human
perception. Voltages of this kind occur as soon as a device or an assembly is touched by a
person who is not electrostatically discharged. ESD components which have been subject to
such voltage are usually not recognized immediately as being defective, because the
malfunction does not occur until after a longer period of operation.

ESD Guidelines

NOTICE
Electrostatic sensitive devices
Electronic modules contain components that can be destroyed by electrostatic discharge.
These modules can be easily destroyed or damaged by improper handling.
• You must discharge your body electrostatically immediately before touching an
electronic component. To do this, touch a conductive, grounded object, e.g., a bare
metal part of a switch cabinet or the water pipe.
• Always hold the component by the plastic enclosure.
• Electronic modules should not be brought into contact with electrically insulating
materials such as plastic film, plastic parts, insulating table supports or clothing made of
synthetic fibers.
• Always place electrostatic sensitive devices on conductive bases.
• Always store and transport electronic modules or components in ESD-safe conductive
packaging, e.g. metallized plastic or metal containers. Leave the component in its
packaging until installation.

NOTICE
Storage and transport
If you have to store or transport the component in non-conductive packaging, you must first
pack the component in ESD-safe, conductive material, e.g., conductive foam rubber, ESD
bag.
