Today I am going to present the topic about sustainable

development. The reason is that my interest was aroused by one
documentary film I watched recently. There is a specific certificate
for companies that are constantly manufacturing under the label
“sustainable” such as fish producers. Surprisingly, while an eco-
activist kept asking CEOs of certain firms how they can define
‘sustainable’ and how principles of this relatively new concept are
applied in the frame of the production processes, some of them
were struggling with an immediate answer. Let us look together at
sustainability and its diverse dimensions in order to gain a clear
understanding.
My thesis statement is as following:

Slide 2
I would like to begin by explaining a general definition of
sustainability in an introduction part. Afterwards I am moving on
to ENV. dimension, right after to ECON. dimension, and
eventually to SOC. dimension of sustainability. In conclusion the
main points will be summarized together with a final closing
comment.
Slide 3
Before turning to an official definition of sustainability, I would
like to hear your ideas. What do u think sustainability or
sustainable means?

Slide 4
The essence of the term sustainable is ‘that which can be
maintained over time’. By implication, this means that any society
that is unsustainable cannot be maintained for long and will cease
to function at some point
Sustainability received a widespread usage after the report of the
United Nations World Commission on Environment and
Development was published in 1987
Slide 6-7
Sustainability is often thought of as composed of three
overlapping, mutually dependent goals: the three P’s of
sustainability include healthy PLANET, growing PROFIT, and
equal PEOPLE.
I would like to start with PLANET: to live in the way that is
environmentally sustainable
Slide 8
The use of non-renewable resources, like fossil fuels and minerals,
reduces the stock available for future generations. However, this
does not mean that such resources should not be used. Land
should not be degraded beyond reasonable recovery, and the
resources should not run out before acceptable substitutes are
available.

Slide 9-10
Sustainability requires that substances introduced to the
environment from human activities be minimized. Nowadays, the
most serious forms of pollution arise from the extraction,
processing, and consumption of non-renewable resources
Slide 11-12
In addition, "Green" technologies for a sustainable, climate- and
resource-friendly energy and water supply can be crucial in
solving the current challenges such as climate change, disruption
to ecosystems and excess resource consumption.

Slide 13
Here is an example of how tendency of using renewable sources of
energy instead of that based on burning fossil fuels has been positively
changing over the last 10 years. As u can observe, in 2020 there were
produced more than double gigawatts of renewable energy in
comparison to 2011. As an example of such energy source is solar
energy. It is the immense source of energy that can fulfill the increasing
energy demand of the world.
Slide 19:
Sustain. society and ECON focus on a broad array of efforts to maintain
social conditions and economic and human well-being. Therefore,
sustainability can be achieved only when environmental protection and
improvement, economic growth, and social equity go hand in hand.
Slide 14-15
Next dimension is economic growth in a body paragraph called
PROFIT.
Sustainable development supposes ensuring material well-being
(such as good health, education, and access to the goods and
services necessary for decent living).
Investments in science in technologies can also create material
well-being for future generations. Moreover, capital accumulation
and technological improvements can even compensate for
environmental degradation.
The last point means that society should be prepared for the
consequences of env. changes that are predicted to occur.
Slide 16
Another good example of rapid evolving importance of
sustainable development we can see on this graph which shows
the number of publications on sustainable business models
Peter Bakker (2012), president of the World Business Council for
Sustainable Development once said that business has both the
opportunity and the responsibility to play an essential role in
responding to and solving the societal and planetary sustainability
challenges.

Slide 17-18
Eventually I finish with the last dimension of sustainable growth
which focuses on people, or on society as a whole
This section is called ‘to live in the way that is socially
sustainable’
One of the social concerns driving sustainable development is that
it is only when people’s basic needs are met that they can begin to
actively address biophysical environmental concerns
The second important aspect of the social sustainable development
paradigm identifies the equal distribution of power and resources,
full employment, access to education, the provision of basic
infrastructure and services, freedom, justice, and so on
A researcher Crabtree in 2005, for example, has shown how
poverty acts as a barrier in the uptake of green technologies, like
solar panels and other means of generating electricity, or on-site
waste disposal.
