YEAR:2022-23 ENGINEERING TIME:
ASSIGNMENT TEST -II 60MIN

1. What is deactivation of catalyst. Explain the mechanism of catalyst deactivation.

2. Write rate and deactivation equations for all cases of deactivation.
3. Spherical solid particles containing B are roasted at constant temperature in an oven
by gas of constant composition. Solids are converted to given a firm non flaking
product according to the shrinking core model SCM. From the following conversion
data determine the rate controlling mechanism for the transformation of solid.
Data;

R, mm T,h XB

R1=2/2=1 1 0.875

R2=1/2=0.5 1 1

4. Calculate the time required for complete burning of particles of graphite size R=5mm,
ρB=2.2 g/cm3, in an 8% oxygen stream at 900oC and 1 atm.

For the high gas velocity and assume that film diffusion does not offer any resistance
to transfer.

Data; k’’=20 cm/s

C+ O2 →CO 2
5. Derive the relation between change of radius with time in shrinking core model when
the resistance is concentrated in between the fluid and solid layer of a spherical
particle.
6.
Two small samples of solids are kept in a constant environment oven for period of 1h,

under the conditions prevailing in size oven, the 4 mm particles are 57.8% converted,

the 2 mm particles are 87.5% converted

Find the rate controlling mechanism for the conversion of solids

Find the time required for complete conversion of 1 mm particle in this oven

R, mm T,h XB
R1=4/2=2 1 0.578

R2=2/2=1 1 0.875
