The IIE Higher Certificate in Early Childhood Care and Education (HCECCE)
will prepare you to start a career in teaching and facilitation in Early
Childhood Education (birth to four years).

DURATION
Face-to-face: This is a one-year, full-time qualification offered by The
Independent Institute of Education (The IIE) at IIE Rosebank College. Face-
to-face lectures take place during the day on weekdays at the following
campuses: Braamfontein, Pretoria CBD, Cape Town, and Durban.

The IIE Higher Certificate in Early Childhood Care and Education is
accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and is registered
by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) on the National
Qualifications Framework (NQF) as a 120-credit qualification on Level 5
(SAQA ID No: 104532). On successful completion, you will receive a
Higher Certi icate in Early Childhood Care and Training from The
Independent Institute of Education (The IIE), a leading registered
private provider of higher education in South Africa.

The following is required to be considered for admission:

English Notes
40% Student’s proficiency in The IIE’s Language of Learning and Teaching
(LoLT), English, plus partial proficiency (sufficient for basic conversation;
40% i.e. conversational competence) in one other South African official language
(excluding Afrikaans) are required components of fundamental learning for this
programme. For this, the following will be endorsed on your certificate:

LoLT:
* This higher certificate is delivered in English and thus English is known as the
Language of Learning and Teaching (LoLT).
* On successful completion of this Higher Certificate in Early Childhood Care and
Education (HC in ECCE), your certificate will be endorsed with LoLT (English).

LoCC:
*If you have an African Language (excluding Afrikaans) as part of your NSC or
Minimum equivalent, you may receive academic credit for this language.
Admission * If you are claiming conversational competence in an African Language (excluding
Requirements Afrikaans), you are required to pass a competency test on NQF Level 5 in order to

for Adults * Competency tests are offered in four (4) official languages only, namely, isiXhosa,
isiZulu, Sepedi and Setswana on The IIE campuses.

of NQF Level 5, or higher conversational competence in that language.
* Once you have demonstrated conversational competence in an African language,
and on successful completion of the HC in ECCE, your certificate will be endorsed,
for example LoCC: isiZulu.

Note: Languages offered are campus dependent.

A SAQA Evaluation Certificate with NSC L4 equivalence with at least 40% or equivalent
International
for English.

Candidates must have attempted the Senior Certificate or equivalent, attained

the age of 23 before or during the first year of registration with three years’ work
Mature Age Exemption experience and proven ability relating to the proposed programme as well as
adequate communication skills; OR Candidates must have attained the age of 45
before or during the first year of registration.
Where candidates do not satisfy the formal admission requirements for this
Recognition of Prior qualification, The IIE may consider an admission application in terms of the Credit
Senate
Learning (RPL) Accumulation and Transfer, Recognition of Prior Learning and Qualification
Discretionary
Completion Policy (IIE010).
Admissions
General Education Candidates with a GED qualification may be admitted if they have a SAQA
Development (GED) - An Evaluation Certificate with NSC L4 equivalence, a minimum score of 165 out of
USA qualification developed 200 for Reasoning through Language Arts and a minimum of 145 out of 200 for
by the American Council on each of the other GED subjects (Mathematical Reasoning, Social Studies and
Education (ACE). Science).
Candidates with an appropriate OQSF Level 4 or 5 Certificate with at least 40 %

TEACHING PRACTICE
The Teaching experience module is to give students an
opportunity to observe Mentor Teachers, their roles and duties,
documentation, assessment system, classroom management,
teacher co-operation and development, school system and
school within the community context. They will carry out
the practical applications of the teaching principles, theories
and concepts they have acquired. Teaching experience is
a compulsory module that is done in this qualification. IIE
Rosebank College will pair each student with the respective
school to ensure that the experience is as diverse as possible.
During these sessions, students will be evaluated at the
respective school by their Lecturer or Supervisor. The timing
of these sessions is carefully mapped at IIE Rosebank College
and students are required to complete 6 weeks of Teaching
experience within the qualification.
The breakdown as follows:
• Block 1: two weeks of observation
• Block 2: four weeks of Teaching Practical
LECTURE ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS
The IIE Higher Certificate in Early Childhood Care and
Education has an attendance rule associated with the
qualification, namely that the student attends 80% of the
classes (lecture) for the stipulated modules. For more
information, refer to the Information regarding Attendance
for modules aligned to School-based Work Integrated
Learning (i.e. Teaching Experience) on The IIE Faculty
of Education programmes document and to the Work
Integrated Learning Policy.
LECTURE ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS (FOR 2022
AND BEYOND)
• Students will be allowed access to the main school-
based Teaching Experience per relevant year if:
a) they have met the 80 % lecture attendance
requirement for each of the identified modules as is
aligned to Teaching Experience for that year.

• Dealing with Exceptions:
In cases where students have not met the 80 % lecture
attendance requirement for 1 or more of the identified
modules as is aligned to Teaching Experience for that year:
b) Students will be expected to achieve a combined
80 % lecture attendance (i.e. average) across the
identified modules on condition that no single
module attendance falls below 70%.
Students who fall into this category will submit a one-page
motivation for Teaching Experience access to The IIE’s
Brand School of Education Campus Programme Manager for
consideration by The IIE’s Brand Head of School: Education
in consultation with The IIE’s Central Academic Team.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
• To be awarded this qualification, a minimum final year
mark of 50% for each module must be achieved.
• This factsheet is valid for the 2022 academic year only.
• Free software is available to all registered IIE Rosebank
College students. The software includes and is
not limited to MS Excel, MS Project, MS Word, MS
PowerPoint and MS Outlook, which come with Office
365 bundle. Students can access the software using
their RCONNECT email address at FTP//10.118.180.17/.
POLICE CLEARANCE
IIE006: Work-Integrated Learning Policy:
All students undertaking an academic qualification with
a school-based WIL component will be required to have
a valid police clearance certificate (PCC) or an Afiswitch
Criminal Check Certificate as accepted by SACE, on
commencement of their Teaching Experience component
in a school.
