Calgary’s History Class #: 4S Course Social Studies

PROGRAM OF STUDY OUTCOMES


General Outcome: Students will demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of how Alberta has grown
and changed culturally, economically and socially since 1905.

4.3.1 appreciate the factors contributing to quality of life in Alberta:

 appreciate the influence of the natural environment and resources on the growth and

development of Alberta (ER, LPP)

4.3.2 assess, critically, the challenges and opportunities that Alberta has faced in its growth and
development by exploring and reflecting upon the following questions and issues:

 What key events have impacted the economy of Alberta (i.e., drought of the 1930s, discovery of oil)?
(ER, LPP, TCC)

4.3.3 examine, critically, Alberta’s changing cultural and social dynamics by exploring and reflecting upon
the following questions and issues:

 How do buildings, historic sites and institutions reflect the establishment and cultural diversity of
communities in Alberta (i.e., Glenbow Museum, Royal Alberta Museum, Head-Smashed-In Buffalo
Jump, Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park, Father Lacombe Chapel Provincial Historic Site, Ukrainian
Cultural Heritage Village)? (CC, I, LPP, TCC)
 How does living in a particular community, region or province help shape individual and collective
identity? (CC, I, LPP)

4.3.4 examine recreation and tourism in Alberta by exploring and reflecting upon the following questions
and issues:

 How do recreational sites and activities reflect Alberta’s heritage and strengthen communities (e.g.,
festivals, fairs, celebrations, rodeos)? (C, CC, I, ER)

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson students will be able to:
1. Students will identify a key event in Calgary’s history and visually represent this event by
designing a coin or stamp
2. Students will provide a brief description and date for a key event in Calgary’s history
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT
 PowerPoint slide with coin/ stamp examples
 Worksheets for each student
 Textbook (Our Alberta Book 1)
 Pencils, pencil crayons, markers
 Whiteboard, Dry Erase Markers
PREPARATION AND LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS
 30-minute lesson
 CJ will complete the activity with his Learning Support Teacher, she will assist him by outlining
the coin or stamp and having CJ trace/color in the sheet

PROCEDURE
Introduction Time
 Explain the term commemorate to students on whiteboard: recall and show
respect for someone or something, celebrate an event, a person, or a situation by
doing or building something, pay tribute to, pay respect to, to remember or
acknowledge
 Ask about ways in which we commemorate (This includes the stamps and coins 10 min
we are making, ceremonies, holidays, statues, buildings)
 Show examples on PowerPoint of coins/stamps, explain key features
 Before handing out explain that coins should have an image, a date, a location,
be colored and include the name of the event on the coin
Body Time
Students create  Have student of the day pass out worksheets
own  Students will pick an event in the history of Calgary
coins/stamps including:
o First Nation way of living (Before 1870s),
o Fort Calgary is built (1875),
o Senator Cochrane starts cattle farming (1881)
o Great Fire in Calgary (1886)
o Calgary is established as a city (1894) 15 min
o First Calgary Stampede (1912)
o Oil is discovered in Turner Valley (1914)
o Calgary Olympics (1988)
o Calgary Flood (2013)
 Students will design, draw, and color a coin/stamp
 Students will label the event and date it

Conclusion 1) Students will share their event and coin/stamp with


the class, explaining how their images represent the
5 minutes
event

Assessment 1) Students’ worksheets- will be checking whether


students have created a visual representation of the
event, have labelled the event, and have dated the
event. Student’s coins/stamps should be colored and
include a date and location

Additional Notes:

If students finish ahead of time have them draw a stamp to accompany the coin they’ve drawn or
vice versa. For students who finish both of these provide a Calgary wordsearch. If whole class
finishes ahead of time read short section from chapter novel (Harry Potter)
