Course Overview 2022-24

(Last reviewed June 2022)

Materials & Resources

● Aiglon Chemistry website - this has links to all sorts of resources. Please familiarise
yourself with it and use it.
● Kognity online login – this is an online textbook and also can be used to generate
revision questions
● You will need to be able to access Google Classroom for prep and here you can also
keep track of your grades
● Textbook (Pearson Baccalaureate Higher or Standard level)– you will be given login
details for the online textbook which is the same as the paper copy we use in class,
but with added features.
● Textbook (Internal Assessment for Chemistry - Christopher Talbot - Hodder) - you
will be provided with a copy.
● Revision Guide (Chemistry for the IB Diploma - Geoffrey Neuss - Oxford) - you
will be provided with your own copy.
● Data booklet – we will give you one, it can also be found on the chemistry website
● File, dividers and paper – you will need to supply both and they must be brought to
lessons, unless we tell you otherwise. Please make sure you keep your file organised.
Alternatively, you can work on an iPad.
● Calculator and basic stationery

What to do if you are finding something difficult

● Talk to your teacher!

● You can also email your teacher to arrange a time to see them
Head of Chemistry: Mrs Barré – fcb16@aiglon.ch
Head of science and Teacher of Chemistry: Mr Draper - cdd19@aiglon.ch
Teacher of Chemistry: Mr Bold - pab21@aiglon.ch

1
The course
You will study 11 core topics, 9 AHL (Additional Higher Level) topics and one option topic.

Assessment:
At the end of the course, you will sit 3 exams:

Paper 1
● 20%

● multiple choice questions on all core and AHL topics

● 1 hour

Paper 2
● 36%

● short answer questions on all core and AHL topics

● 2 ¼ hours

Paper 3
● 24%

● Section A: Data response questions on any core topic

● Section B: Short answer questions on option topic

● 1 ¼ hours

Practical work
You will complete at least 40 hours of practical activities in class
You will complete a 10 hour independent project – counts as 20% of your final grade
You will take part in a “Group 4 project” working together with other students (10 hours). If
you take two science subjects, this will count for both.

Assessments
- Sometimes you may have a short 10 minute test which will be either 7 multiple
choice questions, or a short answer question on “nature of science”. These tests can
be on any topic you have previously studied.
- Regular practical work to help you to prepare for your IA (which you do in June of
Year 12)
- Prep - this is decided by your teacher but may be reading and preparing for a lesson,
or completing questions
- End of topic tests

How do these all count towards mark readings?

What are the grade boundaries?

For end of topic tests, your percentage is converted into a UMS grade which takes into
account how difficult or easy the test was.
