a. identify the types of computer storage devices and their functions;
b. present the advantages and disadvantages of each assigned device;
and
c. demonstrate an understanding on the importance of using computer
storage devices through essay writing.
II. Subject Matter
Topic: Computer Storage Devices
References: TLE CSS Module
Materials: Visual Aids, Laptop, and PPT
Values Integration: Develop a deep appreciation to the devices
III. Procedures
A. Preliminary Activities
 Prayer
The teacher asks one student to lead a prayer.
 Greetings

 Motivation
The teacher groups the students into two and plays
“Figure it Out”. Students are going to choose letters from
the word “COMPUTER” only. Then, the teacher flashes
mystery boxes with their corresponding letter, and let the
students figure out what’s inside the box. After, figuring it
out, the group is going to choose between to keep the
box or give the box to the other group. The box can be
positive or negative, if negative the group score reduces.
The first group to ring a bell is the first group to answer.
Meanwhile, if the other group cannot answer, the other
group has a chance to steal. The team with the most
points win the game.
B. Lesson Proper
A. Activity
With the same group, the teacher assigns specific type of storage
device and each group presents the advantages and disadvantages
of each assigned device.
Group 1 Group 2

Flash Drive Compact Disc

Analysis
The teacher asks random students from each group to answer the
following questions:
1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the flash
drive and Compact Disc?
2. Can you identify the difference of the two devices?

3. How does the use of two devices helps you in keeping your
data?
B. Abstraction
The teacher presents the topic using power point presentation
discussing the following:
 Computer Storage Devices- a computer needs storage
devices before and after processing the data to store
information and access later.
 Volatile Storage Device – means that all the data are gone in
the absence of electricity.
Example: RAM
 Non-Volatile Storage Device –means that all the data
remains in the storage even in the absence of electricity.
Examples: hard disk, flash drive, CD, DVD, memory stick,
SD card
Primary Storage Device – example: RAM
Secondary Storage Devices – examples: hard disk, CD,
DVD, flash drive
Computer Storage Devices can be:
 Fixed Storage Devices – devices that are attached inside the
computer unit.

 Referred to as a primary storage device, this is

where the instructions and results of processing are

stored. You must use the save command of the
Memory (RAM) application to save your work in a secondary device
such as a hard disk.

 Storage capacity is measured by Gigabytes (GB).

Example: 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB

 Hard disk has a higher capacity compared to other

storage devices.
 It is more durable and expensive.
 More files and software can be stored.
 Storage capacity is measured by Gigabytes (GB) or
Figure 2: Hard Disc
Terabytes (TB). Example: 500 GB, 1TB

Removable Storage Devices – devices that can be detached after use.

 Portable, which means it is easy for the user to

copy and transfer files from one computer to
Figure 3:Flash another computer.
Drive
 Higher storage compares to CD or DVD.

 Storage capacity is measured by Gigabytes (GB).

Example: 4 GB, 8 GB, 16, GB, 32 GB, 64 GB

 CD – Compact Disc, 700 Megabytes (MB) in

capacity
 DVD – Digital Video Disc, 4.7 Gigabytes (GB)
Figure 4: CD (Compact
Disc) capacity for single-side, 8.5 GB for singlesided,
double-layer.
 It is good storage for photos, video or data
 The computer must have CD-ROM or DVDROM to
access the information.
 You need a DVD Writer device to store your files
in blank CD or DVD

 Just like a hard disk, you can store a lot of

information but the only difference is that it is
detachable and can be transferred to another
computer to access information.  Storage capacity
is measured by Gigabytes (GB) or Terabytes (TB).

Disk Example: 500 GB, 1TB

C. Application
The teacher asks the students to demonstrate an understanding on the
importance of using computer storage devices through essay writing.
IV. Evaluation
In ¼ sheet of paper, match column A to column B.

COLUMN A COLUMN B
1. Stores data using flash A. Compact Disc (CD)
memory chips B. Hard Disk Drive (HDD)
2. Stores data on a spinning disk C. RAM (Random Access Memory)
3. Stores data on optical discs D.USB Flash Drive
4. Stores data temporarily for E. External Hard disc
immediate access

V. Assignment
Create a chart showing different computer storage devices with their
names, function, purpose, advantages and disadvantages. Write this in a
short bond paper.
