Sample Answer
(Personal document)

As a graduate student from a rural area in Indonesia, I have always wanted to contribute back to my community. During my
undergraduate study in Yogyakarta, I was actively involved in a student organization called Debating Community (DECO) which
leads me to participate in many national and international debating competitions, including being a representative for World
Universities Debating Championship (WUDC) in Thailand. Engaging with this community triggers me to have better
communication skills, strong critical thinking as well as the awareness to actively participate in solving social issues. One of the
problems that concern me is regarding the access for students in Bima to have an English debating environment. Therefore, I offer
an alternative solution by establishing my community focusing on English debate proliferation across Bima region called Mbojo
Debating Society (MDS) in January 2020. My main purpose in initiating this community is to help high school and university
students to have awareness in dealing with global issues as well as understand how to address it.
Firstly, MDS provides qualified coaches who voluntarily want to share their debating-related knowledge through our major
“weekly class” program and also supportive and progressive friends from around eight institutions in Bima. MDS has successfully
conducted online debate training through more than ten times weekly class, and some grand online sparing against Lombok
Debating Troops (LDT). Secondly, on April 2020, we tried to engage with some social activities by collaborating with “Mbojo
Kasamaweki” in providing TOEFL Preparation Class for COVID-19 donation purposes. We utilized the registration fees to distribute
hundreds of face masks for publics and some protective equipment for medical personnel around Bima. MDS gave positive impact
and real change for young generations in my hometown, proven by accommodating 60 students and 20 volunteers around
Indonesia after 5 months establishment.
