PART A: READING COMPREHENSION
Question 1
Read the passage below. Answer all of the questions.

DISNEYLAND

I Walt Disney created a revolutionary vacation destination when he opened

Disneyland in Anaheim, California in 1955. The Park featured four themed
sections: Frontierland, Tomorrowland, Adventureland, and Fantasyland, all
accessed from a plaza at the foot of Main Street, U.S.A. Today, Disneyland still
features these lands, but it also houses 83 attractions -– more than five times 5
the number it opened with -– and sees an average of 44,000 visitors per day.

II Walt and his brother and business partner Roy Disney obtained funding to
construct the new venture from ABC, one of the three major networks then in
existence, in exchange for creating and hosting an hour-long weekly television
show. The resulting program, Disneyland TV, promoted his new park to the 10
largest generation America had ever seen: the Baby Boomers. The Boomers
may not have been old enough to drive the family car, but they could drive
family spending. Disney was gambling that in the flourishing, post-WWII (the 2nd
world War) economy, American families would have extra disposable income to
spend on travel and entertainment, and Disneyland would become a tantalizing 15
destination.

III On July 17, 1955, Disneyland had its invitation-only opening day gala,
which was broadcast live on ABC. Nearly half the American population watched
the festivities from the comfort of their own living rooms. Eleven thousand
people were invited to the park; several thousand more arrived and tried to get 20
in with counterfeit tickets. The day was filled with record-level heat and
mishaps – Fantasyland was closed by a nearby gas leak, and Mr. Toad's Wild
Ride succumbed to an overload of the park's power grid – but Walt Disney was
ecstatic. Within its first ten weeks, Disney's new amusement park attracted one

million visitors. By 1960, that number would rise to five million visitors per year. 25

IV Evidently, Disneyland became a reputable destination for not just a

national audience, including nine former and future U.S. presidents, but an
international one. In 1959, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev famously
protested his exclusion from Disneyland due to alleged safety. Prime Minister
Nehru of India touched down in the park, as did the King and Queen of Nepal, 30
the Shah of Iran, and political leaders from Europe, Africa and South America.
For foreign dignitaries and heads of state, Disneyland provided a window into
American culture and history.

V Walt Disney loved the place, spending much of his time at Disneyland until
he embarked on his next big venture. In the 1960s, he began secretly buying 35
up huge plots of land in Florida for a project he called the "Experimental
Prototype Community of Tomorrow." EPCOT would be "the heart" of Walt
Disney World. In December 1966, before Walt Disney could realize his dream,
he died of lung cancer.

VI The Disney empire continued to expand after the deaths of its founder. By 40
the turn of the century, five cities around the world were home to 13 Disney
theme parks, 46 resort hotels, a Disney cruise line and guided vacation
experiences. In 2013 alone, Walt Disney attractions saw more than 132.5
million park visitors. The original park in Anaheim, Disneyland remains a
popular vacation destination. 45

QUESTION 2

Read the passage carefully and answer the following questions.

Bali Indonesia: Land of the Gods

Also known as the Land of the Gods, Bali appeals through its sheer natural beauty of
looming volcanoes and lush terraced rice fields that exude peace and serenity. It is also
famous for surfers’ paradise! Bali enchants with its dramatic dances and colorful
ceremonies, its arts, and crafts, to its luxurious beach resorts and exciting nightlife. And
everywhere, you will find intricately carved temples.

Bali is located 8 degrees south of the equator, you will find the climate to be the typical
tropical, warm and humid all year round with two main distinctive seasons: Dry Season and
Rainy Season. Some of the areas around Bali's central mountains (volcanoes) have
several peaks over 3,000 meters above sea levels. Up here the temperatures are
considerably cooler, and there is much more rainfall than in the coastal areas.

The gateway to enter Bali by a flight route is through the Ngurah Rai International Airport.
The airport is scheduled to close once a year during the Balinese Nyepi ceremony. Public
transport to Bali is available through travel companies and busses. From the capital of
Jakarta, an overland road trip to Bali can range from 30 hours to a few days. Bali is also
accessible by ferry ride from an island of Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara.

Most of the starred hotels are located near the beach. Some even have their own private
spots at certain beaches, where you can splurge on exclusive privilege. You can find them
easily at popular spots like Kuta, Sanur, and Seminyak.

For a quieter evening enjoy the beach at Jimbaran, a popular spot to eat fresh barbecued
seafood. Seminyak is home to five-stars international hotels and luxurious accommodation
studded with fancy dining spots. Sanur Beach also dotted with hotels and restaurants. You
can also visit Nusa Dua, where more private beaches front super deluxe hotels.

Bali’s white beaches are certainly a favorite destination for family holidays. There are a
variety of watersports available, such as banana boats, parasailing or jet skiing, go
swimming or you may just linger and enjoy good sunbathing by the sea.

The best dive spots can be located at Menjangan island, with its reef flat, anchor wreck, eel
garden and caves to explore. Located in the western part of Bali, you can enjoy the rare
sight of deer swimming near the beach. Pemutaran is also famous for its diving activities
renowned for reef conservation.

Try exploring or trekking the West Bali National Park, where you may get up close and
personal with Bali’s rich flora and fauna, such as Jalak Bali or the Bali Starling.
