CARE OF LINEN AND EQUIPMENT

Equipment
It refers to various devices, tools, instruments that are used in hospitals and health
care works.
Types of Equipment
Two types of equipment there are -
(1) Disposable - The items which are thrown by using once.

(2) Reusable - Reusable means items which can be used again and again even when
used once. These are cleaned, disinfected and sterilized before and after each use.

Care and Maintenance of Equipment
A list of different types of equipment used in the hospital.
(1) Linen-
Linen is a fabric made from fibers. It includes clothes, bed sheets, pillow
cover, towel blankets etc. Cotton is most preferred and frequently used
material as it is cheaper and more comfortable.
Linens used in hospital setup -
‫ ܀‬Bedsheets ‫ ܀‬Pillow cover ‫ ܀‬Gown
‫ ܀‬Blankets ‫ ܀‬Mattress cover ‫ ܀‬Clotheslap

Rubber Goods-Purposes -
(1) To prevent spread of infection.
(2) To remove stains.
(3) To preserve life of articles.
(4) To clean the article and prepare for re-use.
Rubber good articles used in the hospital -
‫܀‬ Mackintosh ‫ ܀‬Hot water bottle, ice cups, ice-collors
‫܀‬ Gloves ‫ ܀‬Rubber tubes - gavage, lavage, flatus, rectal
‫܀‬ Ambu bag ‫ ܀‬Air and water mattresses
‫܀‬ Aquathermia pads

Sterilization of Rubber Articles -

‫ ܀‬Autoclaving- 121-123°C and pressure of 15-17 Ibs/Square inch for 15 minute.
‫ ܀‬Chemical Sterilization -
(I) Savlon - 30 minutes.
(II) Glutaraldehyd - 10-20 minutes for chemical disinfection and 10
hours for chemical sterilization.
(III) Alcohol 50-70% - 20-30 minutes.Boiling-15-20 minute.

Glass Items - Articles made up of glass are very fragile and special care is needed
while handlingthem.Purposes -
‫ ܀‬To prevent spread of infection. ‫ ܀‬To prepare for safe reuse.
‫ ܀‬To prevent damage to the item. ‫ ܀‬To prolong its life.

INDENT-
‫ ܀‬An indent is an official order or requisition for medicine and supplies from the
medical store.
‫ ܀‬Indent is a list of items made for availing in the ward. A list of items is made,
which are not available in the stock.
‫ ܀‬Indent is done weekly/monthly basis depending upon the shortage of items.
After making the list, it is been sent to the main store.
‫ ܀‬Record is maintained on register/note book know as indent book.

INVENTORY-
❖ Inventory is a detailed list of articles in the ward, their specifications, standard
number or quality.
❖ It is record of articles available in the ward.* Inventory control means stocking
an adequate number and type of stores, so that the materials are available
whenever required.
❖ Inventory control is the process of maintaining the optimum needed quantity
that is sufficient for the smooth operation of the organization.
