India is 3rd largest digitalised country among G20 nations


 According to the State of India's Digital Economy Report, 2024, by the Indian Council for Research
on International Economic Relations (ICRIER), India is the third largest digitalised country in the
world, only behind the United States of America (USA) and China.
 However, at the level of individual users, India is ranked 12th in terms of digitalisation among the
G20 countries.
 The study is based on ‘CHIPS’ framework wherein it has scored countries on five pillars - connect,
harness, innovate, protect and sustain.

Adani Electricity Mumbai tops discoms rating chart, Torrent Power Surat 2nd
 Adani Electricity Mumbai has topped the chart in the performance ranking of power distribution
companies for 2022-23.
 Torrent Power Surat and Torrent Power Ahmedabad were at second and third spots in the 12th
edition of Integrated Rating of Discoms released by Union Minister for Power and New &
Renewable Energy R K Singh.
 As many as 14 out of 55 distribution companies received the highest A+ rating.
 Utilities of Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh were in the A+ / A
category, a power ministry release stated.

Indian bond markets eye smaller below $5 billion inflow from Bloomberg inclusion

 Indian government bond market participants informed they expect inflows of less than $5 billion
from the recent inclusion in the Bloomberg Index Services, which is unlikely to have any material
impact on bond yields.
 Bloomberg Index Services would include 34 Indian government bonds eligible for investment via
the country's fully accessible route (FAR), in its Emerging Market Local Currency Index (EMLC)
from Jan. 31, 2025.
 Indian benchmark bond yield has remained around 7.05% for the last few sessions, and is unlikely
to ease much in the near term.

New Delhi Ranked World’s Most Polluted Capital City For 4th Consecutive Year Since 2018
● New Delhi is ranked the world’s most polluted capital city for the fourth consecutive year since 2018.
● According to the Air Quality Report 2023 conducted by Swiss organisation IQAir, Delhi’s PM2.5
levels worsened from 89.1 micrograms per cubic metre in 2022 to 92.7 micrograms per cubic metre
in 2023.
● Bihar’s Begusarai has emerged as the world’s most polluted metropolitan area.
● With an average annual PM2.5 concentration of 54.4 micrograms per cubic metre, India had the third
worst air quality after Bangladesh and Pakistan.
● The report estimated that more than one billion people in India experience PM2.5 concentrations
exceeding the World Health Organisation’s recommended annual guideline level of 5 micrograms per
cubic metre.

EC Announces Para Archer & Arjuna Awardee Sheetal Devi As National PwD Icon
● The Election Commission has announced Para Archer and Arjuna Awardee, Sheetal Devi as its
National PwD Icon.
● Her name was announced at an Exhibition Cricket Match between the Indian Deaf Cricket
Association Team and the Delhi and District Cricket Association team held in Delhi.
● The match was organised by the Election Commission in association with the Board of Control for
Cricket in India to foster voter education and inclusivity.
● The event was graced by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioners
Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu

Indian Olympic Association Dissolves Ad-Hoc Committee For Wrestling


● The Indian Olympic Association, IOA dissolved the ad-hoc committee for wrestling. The committee
was formed in December last year after the sports ministry suspended the Wrestling Federation of
India

Finland ranked the world's happiest country for seventh year


● India was ranked 126th out of 143 nations in a global happiness index released which noted that
older age is associated with higher life satisfaction in the world's most populous country.

● Finland emerged as the happiest country in the world, topping the World Happiness Report 2024, the
seventh successive year that the country has occupied the top spot on the list.
● The other top 10 countries are Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, Israel, Netherlands, Norway,
Luxembourg, Switzerland and Australia.
● India is ranked 126th on the list, behind countries such as Libya, Iraq, Palestine and Niger, according
to the findings announced to mark the UN's International Day of Happiness.

Forced labour generates $236 billion illegal profits per year


● According to the International Labour Organization (ILO) forced labour in the private economy
generates $236 billion in illegal profits per year with the total amount of illegal profits from forced
labour rising by $64 billion or 37% since 2014.
● The report was titled ‘Profits and poverty: The economics of forced labour’.
● Forced labour generates illegal profits worth $36 billion per year.
● According to ILO, there were 27.6 million people engaged in forced labour on any given day in 2021.

The Hurun Research Institute has released the 13th edition of the 2024 Hurun Global Rich List.
● Among global billionaires of Hurun Global Rich List, Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, has re-emerged as the
richest man, boasting a fortune of $231 billion followed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, with a net
worth of $185 billion, Bernard Arnault ($175 billion), Mark Zuckerberg ($158 billion) and Larry Willson
($140 billion).
● Hurun Global Rich List’s wealth calculations are a snapshot for the year ended January 15, 2024.
● It is the 13th edition of the ranking.
● Pop superstar Taylor Swift, 34, joined the billionaire club with wealth valued at $1.2 billion, earned
not through typical celebrity side hustles but through her music.
● Taylor Swift became the youngest self-made woman billionaire at 34.
● The global billionaires list witnessed as many as 94 new entrants from India. India's billionaire tally
touched 271 with their combined wealth at $1 trillion.
● India witnessed a “super strong year”, with the country adding the most new entrants to the
billionaire list, after the US (132).
● China added only 55 new faces.
● Mukesh Ambani (10th rank)i, chairman & managing director of Reliance Industries, is the only Indian

terms.
● Mumbai has pipped Beijing to become Asia's billionaire capital for the first time. New Delhi with 57
billionaires ranked 9th.
● New York has the highest concentration of billionaires (119), followed by London (97) Mumbai (92)
Beijing(91) Shanghai (87).
● India added the second-highest number of new billionaires (94) after the US (109) China ranked 3rd
with 55.
● With 271 billionaires, India is now the third-ranked country globally, surpassing Germany.

World wastes 19% of its food while 783 million face chronic hunger: UN

● The UN Environment Programme's Food Waste Index Report published, tracks the progress of
countries to halve food waste by 2030.
● The world wasted an estimated 19% of the food produced globally in 2022, or about 1.05 billion
metric tons, according to a new United Nations report.
● The U.N. stated the number of countries reporting for the index nearly doubled from the first
report in 2021.
● The 2021 report estimated that 17% of the food produced globally in 2019, or 931 million metric
tons (1.03 billion tons), was wasted, but authors warned against direct comparisons because of
the lack of sufficient data from many countries.
● The report is co-authored by UNEP and the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP),
an international charity.
