RECAP
In module 16 you learned that in Metro Manila and nearby provinces,
the distributor of electricity is the Manila Electric Company (MERALCO),
while, in some provinces, local cooperatives manages the distribution. To
review your previous lesson, complete the given statement below by filling in
each blank with a correct word found inside each heart below.

(1)____________ ____________ is generated from (2)_________ ___________

like (3)_____________, ___________, ___________, ___________ in a facility called
(4)__________________ ____________ and transmitted through (5)___________
_____ _____________ which connects all power stations across the country,
also called (6) __________ ___________and distributed to (7) _______________.
LESSON

Electricity is the most versatile and easily controlled form of energy. At

the point of use it is practically loss-free and essentially non-polluting. At the
point of generation it can be produced clean with entirely renewable methods,
such as wind, water and sunlight. There are three stages of electric power
supply; generation, transmission and distribution. Each of these stages
involves distinct production processes, work activities and hazards.
◆ Electric Power Generation
Electricity is most often generated at a power plant by
electromechanical generators, primarily driven by heat engines fueled by
combustion or nuclear fission but also by other means such as the kinetic
energy of flowing water and wind. Other energy sources include solar
photovoltaics and geothermal power. The process of producing electric
energy or the amount of electric energy produced by transforming other forms
of energy into electrical energy is commonly expressed in kilowatt-hours
(kWh) or megawatt-hours (MWh).
◆ Transmission of Electric Energy
Electrical power transmission involves the bulk movement of electrical
energy from a generating site, such as a power station or power plant, to
an electrical substation where voltage is transformed and distributed to
consumers or other substations. The electrical charge goes through high-
voltage transmission lines that stretch across the country. It reaches a
substation, where the voltage is lowered so it can be sent on
smaller power lines. It travels through distribution lines to your
neighborhood.
◆ Distribution of Electric Energy
Electric power distribution is the final stage in the delivery of electric
power; it carries electricity from the transmission system to individual
consumers. Distribution substations connect to the transmission system and
lower the transmission voltage to medium voltage ranging
between 2 kV and 35 kV with the use of transformers. Primary distribution
lines carry this medium voltage power to distribution transformers located
near the customer's premises. Distribution transformers again lower the
voltage to the utilization voltage used by lighting, industrial equipment and
household appliances. Often several customers are supplied from one
transformer through secondary distribution lines. Commercial and
residential customers are connected to the secondary distribution lines
through service drops. Customers demanding a much larger amount of power
may be connected directly to the primary distribution level or
the subtransmission level.

After electricity has been generated from power plants or power

stations, a system of electrical wires carries the electricity from the source
of generation to our homes and businesses. Power plant generates electricity,
then a transformer steps up voltage for transmission. A transmission line is
used for the transmission of electrical power from generating substation to
the various distribution units. It transmits the wave of voltage and current
from one end to another, then a neighborhood transformer steps down voltage
for distribution. Distribution lines carry electricity to houses. Transformers on
poles stepdown electricity before it enters houses.

Modern society depends on reliable and economic delivery of electricity.

Regardless of voltage, all transmission lines incur energy losses
as electricity moves from where it's generated to where it's
used. Electricity flows most efficiently and with the lowest losses
on higher voltage lines.

Note that transmitting DC power over a long distance is inefficient.

Thus, AC supply is a far more efficient to transmit power.Alternating Current
is used for electric power distribution because it can easily be transformed to
a higher or lower voltage. Electrical energy losses are dependent on current
flow. By using transformers, the voltage can be stepped up so that the same
amount of power may be distributed over long distances at lower currents and
hence lower losses due to the resistance of the conductors. The voltage can
also be stepped down again so it is safe for domestic supply.
