Introduction: The visit to Nagpur Central Jail on February 19, 2024, aimed to comprehensively evaluate
various aspects of the facility, including living conditions, rehabilitation programs, prisoner activities, and
infrastructure. The objective was to gain insight into the operations and conditions within the jail
premises.

Facility Overview: Nagpur Central Jail, a prominent correctional facility in the region, houses
approximately 2,848 male prisoners. It comprises several departments and initiatives focused on
prisoner rehabilitation and management.

Observations:

Living Conditions:

 Living quarters observed were reasonably maintained, considering space limitations.

 Adequate facilities for personal hygiene, including a clothes washing saw, were noted.

 The provision of shelter, meals, and basic amenities ensured the fundamental needs of inmates
were met.

Rehabilitation and Skill Development:

 The operational bakery department provides vocational training and produces goods for internal
use or sale.

 Inmates actively engage in various activities, including facility maintenance and supervised
electrical wiring.

 Implementation of quality manuals ensures consistency and standards across all prison
operations.

Healthcare Services:

 Basic healthcare services, along with access to medicines, are available onsite.

 Medical assistance is provided to inmates, with provisions for specialized care and treatment.

 Protocols for managing death penalty cases adhere to legal standards and human rights
principles.

Legal Aid and Family Interaction:

 Access to legal aid facilities enables inmates to understand their rights and legal options.

 Visitation rights facilitate meetings with family members and lawyers, fostering social

  A designated PTC station facilitates inmate-family communication, promoting emotional well-
being.

 Participation in productive work offers relaxation in total imprisonment duration, encouraging

rehabilitation efforts.

 Prisoners contribute to the production of furniture for the session court, showcasing their skill
development and contribution to the legal system.

 CSR fundraising initiatives support various prison programs, promoting social responsibility and
