RATING SCALE

Rating is the assessment of person by another person. It consist of set charecteristics or

qualities to be judged and some type of scale for indicating the digree upto which attribute is
present .the major alternative is to use rating scale that require the observer to rate some
phenomenon in terms of points along a descriptive continuum .the rating usually are qualified
during the subsequent analysis of observational data.

DEFINITION

Rating is a term applied to expression of openion or judgement regarding some situation object
or character . opinions are usually expressed on scales of values –Barr and others

Rate scale records how much well it happened .Quantitative and qualitative terms of point
along descriptive continuum.

Rating techniques are devices by which judgement may be qualified. A rating acale is a device
by which the the opinion concerning a trait can be systematized

Observer to rate some phenomenon in terms of point along a descriptive continuum.

Eg: how good was the performance ?

TYPES

 Numerical rating scale

 Graphic rating scale
 Descriptive graphic rating scale
 Comparative rating scale

Numerical rating scale

One of the simplest type of rating scale is that in which the rater puts the check or circles a
number to indicate the digree to which a characteristic is present .The numerical rating scale is
useful when the charecteristics to be rated can be classified into limited number of categories
and when there is general agreement concerning the category represented by each number .

Eg: indicate the degree to which pupil contribute to class discussion .the numbers represents
the following values

(5)-out standing (4)-above average (3)-average (2)-below average (1) –poor

To what extent the pupil participate in class discussion ? 1 2 3 4 5 ( circle the number )
Graphic rating scale

In this each characteristic is followed by horizontal line. The rater indicates the perfomers
standing in respect to each trait by placing a check mark on appropriate point along the line. By
this scale we can avoid vague, unlikely and extreme statements.

Direction –place an (x) any where along the horizontal line

To what extent does the pupil participate in class discussion

Never seldom occasionally frequently always

Descriptive rating scale

Uses descriptive phrases to identify the points on graphic scale. The description are brief details
that convey in behavioral terms how people behave at different steps along the scale.a space
for comments are also provided to enable the rater to clarify the rating or to record behavioral
incidents pertinent to the rating or to record behavioral incident pertinent to characteristic
being rated.

Place an x anywhere along the horizontal line and add a comment to classify your rating

Never participate participate as much as other participates more than

Quit passive group members any other group members

Comparative rating scale

A type of scale which requires the respondent to make their rating as a series of relative
judgement for comparison with a benchmark-perhaps another similar concept such as a
comparative brand – explicitly used as a frame of reference. In many cases the comparative
rating scale presents the ideal situation as a reference point for comparison with actual
situation.

USES OF RATING SCALE

Mainly classified in 3 areas.

 Procedure evaluation
 Product evaluation
 Personel-social development

Procedure evaluation

In many areas achievement is expressed specifically through students performance.examples

include ability to give health education ,work effectively in group performing various
procedure.

Product evaluation

When pupil performance result in some type of product that can be evaluated and paper and
pencil test are generally inadequate

Personel-social development

One of the most common uses of rating scale in the schools in rating various aspects of
personel social development , and it is quite different from procedure and product
evaluation .rating obtained at periodical intervals and represent a kind of summing up of
teachers general impressions

PRINCIPLES

 It directly relate to learning objection

 Needs to be confined to performance areas that can be observed
 Clearly defines the specific trait or mode of behavior
 Allow some space in the rating scale card for the rate to give supplementary remarks
 3 to 7 rating positions may need to be provided
 There should be provisions to omit items , like teacher feels unqualified to judge
 All rates should be oriented to the specific scales as well as the process of rating in
general
 The rates should be unbiased
 Change the end of the scale so that good is not always at the top or always at the
bottom
 Assure the rate that his anonymity will be maintained

LIMITATIONS OF RATING SCALES

 It is different or dangerous to fix up rating about many aspects of individual

 Halo effect in judgement may take place
 Chances like the rater may over estimate or unknown persons
 The rates does not want to make extreme judgement chances to subjective
evaluation ,thus the scale may become unscientific and unreliable

DISADVANTAGES OF RATING SCALE

Misuse can result in consequent decrease in objectivity

COMMON ERRORS IN RATING SCALE

Certain errors are occurs in rating irrespective of experience of the evaluator .they are

 Personel bias
 Generosity errors
 Central tendency errors
 Logical errors
 Halo effect

Personel bias

They indicated by general tendency of evaluator to rate all individuals at approximately the
same position on the scale

Generosity errors

Some rators tend to use the high end the scale only and it is the generosity or leniency errors

Central tendency errors

This is shown by rater who avoid both extreme of the scale & tend to rate every one
average .eg:examiners prefer to place students more or less in the average ,avoiding extreme
high or low

Logical errors

Logical errors results when two charecteristics rae rated as more alike or less alike than they
actually are because the raters belief concerning

Halo effect

As applied to ratings the terms refers to tendency of raters to base evaluation of person being
related upon general favourables toward that individual and not to different degrees of specific
rates
