ON BEING MOVED ON …….
It was in the February of 1796 that a little known Bishop, a white haired portly man of the cloth
dressed in a red robe, and a starched ruff, appeared at the gates of St. Andrew’s Church in
Middleton. It was a church he had not seen nor visited previously as it did not appear on the list of
properties he managed on behalf of the benefice. The resident vicar was as surprised as the
Bishop to discover this oversight but assumed that his lack of contact with District HQ was
because he was doing everything correctly. Mrs Burnridge, the Church secretary, who had been
taking fish oil for many years was feeling restless and looking for a way to get to Tuscany, offered
the Bishop a cup of coffee made from special beans that were usually kept for angels and visitors from the other side. After
a couple of feisty exchanges the Bishop realised that Reverend Wheeler had been in his post for some thirty years, had put
down roots and had almost probably sugar coated the gospel message. Indications of sermons linked to radical
vegetarianism and chorister recruitment issues pointed to what he observed to be a slow degeneration in to preaching
about trees, flowers, rainbows and brotherly love.

Geraldine, the vicar’s wife had for some time been the leading light of an unusual women’s group in the Village which
focussed on offering a helping hand to others, although her attempts to introduce a Feng Shui group at the Village Hall
had ended in epic failure. Not enough interest. As the years passed she had thought it an unsustainable position and was
constantly fearful of divine retribution.

The Wheelers were instructed to remove themselves from the Old Vicarage with immediate effect and find a new position.
As luck would have it and unknown to the Bishop a new multi purpose shopping facility had opened not two days ride away
on the meadowy outskirts of a prosperous new town called Chef’s Field. They were looking to appoint a resident Minister to
tend to the complex needs of a burgeoning number of visitors seeking pastoral guidance and consumer advice.

Successful in his application Reverend and Geraldine Wheeler had never been happier, being able to walk unnoticed
amongst their congregation, shopping for food and clothes without being recognised and benefitting from luxurious on site
accommodation. Financially they were without the cost of their own transport and garage rental, they paid no rent and had
an attractive and significantly improved annual salary. The Bishop remained in Middleton for a few days before imposing a
seven year Interregnum on the residents and congregation. Mrs Burnridge refused the promise of a life in Italy and the
advances of the Bishop. Records show that she, in the dead of night, left the Church to join the Wheelers as their
housekeeper.
