Hello Everyone.
Apologies from me and the printer for the 'black' photos. A printer reset was the
culprit, so now I will be going in each issue to sign off the copy!
It is proving to be an issue of farewells to 'Judiths!' We say goodbye to Rev Judith,
who has served us well and graciously for many years and we wish her well in her
retirement. Also a sad/fond farewell to one of our best Doctors, Dr Judith Scott.
Retirement is a whole new adventure with a few twists and turns, clearing out, the
memories of a working life, rescheduling and restructuring your days and getting
used to a whole new rhythm of life. Of course there are many plus points, not so
many appointments and freeing up time. An opportunity for a re-think on how to live
the rest of your life.
We wish both Rev. Judith and Dr Judith the happiest of long retirements and Thank
you for the love, care and healing.
Wishing you all a super sun-kissed summer. Gina

TO ALL PARISHIONERS
TO ALL PARISHIONERS
This will be my last Vicar's letter and it's a personal message of gratitude to
you all.
I will be retiring in August after nine years as Team Vicar and Acting Team
Rector. I thank you most sincerely for your legendary Norfolk hospitality
during this time. My family – Mike, Joseph, Luke and Jacob and I - couldn't have been made
more warmly welcome.
It has been a great privilege to minister in the parishes of our benefice/group during some
challenging times such as the Covid lockdowns; together, we got through it all – caring
communities working together. I shall miss you all very much.
On a personal note, domestic circumstances mean that our disabled sons have a permanent
home in mid-Wales and there may come a time when we move Westwards, perhaps
Herefordshire. Our property in Stibbard is on the market and when sold, we will have a
clearer idea of the way forward. Meanwhile, we are in limbo and I would ask for your prayers.

Norfolk isn't somewhere you pass through – it is a destination in itself. As well as the people,
there are so many things I shall miss: the majestic sunsets, big skies, primeval woodland, the
varied wildlife, glorious beaches and impressive country houses: a landscape that glorifies
God in creation.
John Betjeman wrote movingly about there always being a church tower on the Norfolk skyline
or down a country lane. We have a duty to maintain and ensure our group of ten medieval
churches containing many examples of church architecture at its finest - are well worth
exploring! There are 658 churches in Norwich Diocese, more per head of population than
anywhere else in the world. Huge thanks to everyone in our communities who contribute so
much - a wide variety of amazing fundraising activities.
Is there anyone out there? Our group will need an able administrator to assist the person
who will, in due course succeed me in ministry. Just thought I'd mention it…
Our own dear St. Julian of Norwich is endlessly comforting and spiritually uplifting. “All will be
well; and all will be well – and all manner of things shall be well.” Of that I have no doubt
whatsoever.
Do you remember the Peter Cook and Dudley Moore sign-off music: “Now is the time to say
goodbye, now is the time to yield a sigh… until we meet again some sunny day…” Also the
farewell hymn from Hymns Ancient and Modern: “God be with you till we meet again, by his
counsels guide, uphold you, keep love's banner floating o'er you, God be with you till we meet
again!”
For the last time my continuing prayers, bright hope for the future, love and deep gratitude,
Reverend Judith. x

Gayton Past Times
I was given this photo by Mr Tony Griffin. Which features himself in his uncle Ralph's
lorry. This got me thinking about the old warehouses on Lynn Road near Winch
Road.
Ralph used to trade in vegetables, mostly carrots and potatoes. The lorry can be
seen in photo 2 in front of the warehouses. Note the 3 digit telephone number on the
lorry.
In the photo, Alcocks Coal yard can just
be seen, the fuel tanks used to fill up
before we headed to the Coal mines in
Derbyshire. I remember stopping at Long
Sutton for breakfast when a long day lies
ahead.
When Ralph stopped trading, the
buildings were used for storage. Later
Tommy Murfitt came along and started a

whilst living on the site in an Old Bus.
What a character. He moved to Pott Row
,then to Heacham, then to Gt

not well received by the locals. He moved

The site was subsequently developed

Guide Camp 2023 Part Two
When the girls arrive they have to put up their own
tents. We use the Icelandics, bought with a Lottery
Grant in1999. They’re more robust than the modern
ones. We split the girls into patrols and each patrol
gets to share a tent, usually 4-6 girls. They pitch
their tent (with help) and stow away their personal
gear., then they help to organise the Kitchen and
First Aid areas. Patrols take it in turns to do various
jobs, Cooks, Health, Wood and Water, so they are all
responsible to each other. We had a lovely campfire on Monday evening, with some great
singing and lovely toasted marshmallows.
Up at 7.30 on Tuesday – they are always awake early the first morning – and Cooks have to
make breakfast, which, this year was cereal followed
by eggy bread and beans.
Once tents are checked it's off to Paddle boarding.
Even though it was very chilly the girls were all up for
it and most even took a dip in the river – some not
entirely by design! They were ready for a hot shower
after this.
After a buffet lunch with salad, crisps, chocolate
biscuits and fruit, it was Zip Line time. Some adults
had a go at this one, then in the evening was spent
of making paper flowers.
On Wednesday the morning activity was to make
Arepas which are a kind of Columbian pancake. We
also made butterfly mobiles and mosaic patterns
with Hama beads. We visited the ARC in the afternoon and finished off the butterflies and
decorated fairy doors in the evening.
On Thursday the activities were Raft Building in the morning – more dips in the water - and
Obstacle Course in the afternoon. We always finish off with a Wide Game (a game played
over a wide area) and a themed party on the last evening.
Friday is spent packing up and striking (taking down) tents. Everything has to be put away
clean and dry, ready for next time.
Camp is closed with a small ceremony when we present prizes and thank everyone, its lovely
when parents can join us for this before taking their daughter home. Camp hasn't finished for
the leaders though. The trailer had to be loaded and unloaded the next day when it arrived
home. There is always lots of sorting out to do.
Grateful thanks to my amazing team, who work so hard to make this happen. Linda W

A recipe for life this time. If, like us, you have youngsters on the

this poem might be appropriate. It is Rudyard Kipling's famous 'If.'

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;

If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings

And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And—which is more—you'll be a Man, my son!

Congratulations to ALL GCSE/A Level students . You did your best and
whatever your results, remember that you are all as important as each other..

Sunday the 6th August will be Rev Judith's last service with us as she
is retiring. We are holding a special Holy Communion service for all
the Benefice that day to celebrate Judith's time with us and to wish
her and Mike every happiness in their retirement.
Do please come and join with us at 10.30am at St Botolph's
Grimston and for refreshments afterwards when everyone will have
time to speak to Judith.

Due to unfortunate circumstances Trevor Plowright has had to give up cutting the
churchyard grass. We do thank Trevor for all the work he has done over the years.
The PCC is currently seeking a new home for the mower and person(s) to cut the
grass. We will resolve this problem as soon as possible.
If anybody would like to volunteer please contact me as Churchwarden Tel 636629
and I will explain every thing to you and what progress we have made.
Many thanks Stan Watkinson Churchwarden

Rural Matters
What a rapid change in the weather, from needing the heating on to 30 degrees.
Nature had slowed down due to the cold snap – birds nesting was on hold in some
cases; plants held back on flowering and trees later to leaf. Now it is all systems
go, young fledging birds being fed by their parents, darting backwards and
forwards, and who may well lay a second brood of eggs. Wild flower meadows are
currently at their best – however, finding them can be difficult as we have lost 97%
of our wildflower meadows since 1930. These provide such great breeding
grounds for insects, so important at the bottom of the food chain.

Midsummer is when the sounds of nature alter. Less

birdsong but the sounds of insects can be heard, whether it is
Bees, Grasshoppers/Crickets, Hover flies or the wing beats of
Hawk Moths. These large moths can often be seen hovering
in front of a flower while feeding on the nectar; they love
Honeysuckle and Petunias in particular. In grasslands Butterflies can be seen
flying. We are used to the brightly coloured Peacock, Red Admiral, Comma
Butterflies but look out for Brown Butterflies like Ringlet, Meadow Brown or
Speckled Wood. Night is the main flying and feeding time for Moths.

Identifying all these insects, wildflowers, grasses, Bees etc. is difficult if you are not
an expert. The “Field Studies Council” produce a series of identification charts,
which you can find online or in most Nature Reserve shops. These are very useful
for children or people wanting to know more about the things in their environment.
With summer here and something to keep the children occupied - a few charts and
a country walk. Alternatively, The Norfolk Wildlife Trust runs a number of walks and
activities throughout Norfolk. Locally a walk with the warden on Roydon Common
for 'Commons Week' on July 6th or Holme Dunes on July 14th 20th and 21st. Both
need booking through NWT (norfolkwildlifetrust.org.uk). There may be a small
charge. Ideal for Children are their specific activities and at the visitors centre at
Cley. Get out there, it is great fun with knowledgeable people!!

The dry spell is critical for everyone and as grass and flowers fade there is little
protection for insects to live and lay eggs. My advice would be to not cut your grass
too short in the heat – it will die more quickly; longer grass will last longer and look
green for longer. Birds and mammals also need water to survive and many birds
prefer to feed/ take water on the ground, so a good idea to leave a dish or tray of
fresh water for them. Hedgehogs like water, but are Lactose intolerant, so do not
put milk down for them as they will become very ill. Enjoy being out and about
during the summer. John Hayes

Grimston Cricket Club

The summer and the cricket season are in full swing, with
matches being played at Adult, U13 and U9 age groups.
Our U9s travelled to Snettisham for the first game of 2023, and were
narrowly beaten in the final over. Some terrific performances from our young
cricketers were on display with superb bowling and batting.

The U13s side also travelled to Snettisham, putting in an amazing display and
winning the match in the penultimate over against their young opposition. More
importantly, they played fairly with lots of respect and laughter shared.

The adults team have struggled after a strong start, recording losses against
Thornham and Downham Stow despite performing well. We hope to bounce back in
the second half of the season to get our promotion push back on track.

Our annual Family Fun Day and Mark Redhead Memorial Match
will be taking place on Saturday 8th July at 1pm. As with previous
years there will be bouncy castles, a BBQ and a bar -
we will also be hosting the Snail Racing World
Championships alongside our Legends vs 2023 cricket
match.
We hope to see lots of you there to enjoy the day and
raise money for the club, in memory of our former captain and
true club legend.

A man goes into an antiques dealership carrying a violin and a

painting. "Hi. I found these in the loft of the house I've just
bought.
I'm interested in having them valued with a view to selling
them." The owner, duly fascinated takes them into the back to
give them the once over.

"Very interesting." he tells the man on his return. "You realise, you've got a genuine
Rembrandt and a bona fide Stradivarius here."

"That's wonderful- I'm rich!" exclaims the man.

"Not so fast, son." replies the dealer- "Rembrandt violins are notorious poor quality
and Stradivarius couldn't paint to save his life."

EAST WALTON NEWS
Wonders from the Ground
The dates for East Walton archaeology dig will be from Monday 21st
to Friday 25th August at Abbey Farm, East Walton. PE32 1PP

We all walk upon history every day of our lives. We barely notice as we have our
lives to lead, and the landscape upon which we move seems permanent and barely
changing. But over the centuries change does happen.

Lets go back to 8000BCE.

hy that date? Because that when what we know as the UK was re-colonised by
modern man after the last Ice Age. Hunter gatherers and hardy men and women.
They had a rich culture but one that was based on flint and bone. The bone has
largely decayed, but their highly worked flint tools sometimes are turned up by the
plough. It is easy for us to think of these people as 'primitive', but the moment you
handle one of these flint 'axes' (they were not just axes, but that is a different story)
you are connected to a sophisticated world long gone. But they made no real marks
on the landscape, forested, wooded and what we would call Brecks in Norfolk and
Suffolk.

Time passes…
More peoples come across the sea. They have come because (in part) they are
farmers, a new technology, but one which changes the landscape. Known by us
today as Beaker People (because distinctive beakers were placed in their graves)
they cleared the marginal land, mostly the higher land where it was easier to clear
trees in order to farm, and subsequent waves of immigrants through the Bronze and
Iron Ages cleared more land, as tool and metal working technologies improved. (Its
less difficult to fell a mighty oak with an iron axe!)
Then came the Romans. Further farming technologies cleared more land, and wheat
and barley were now grown not just for domestic consumption, but for export as well.
After Boudicca had revolted and been killed, what we know as East Anglia was
controlled and directly owned by the Emperor in Rome. This meant that great private

estates were few, and rich farms rather than villas were the thing. After the retreat of
the Romans, we come to the 'Dark Ages'… called that because there was not much
written evidence of what went on, but now known as 'Early Middle Ages', as it turned
out there was more written at the time than we thought,
and archaeology has drawn aside the veil to some
extent. The Saxons continued farming and clearing land.
The Vikings arrived, and cleared land. But we are marked
by both groups. Our villages and many towns carry
Saxon and Viking names.
1066 arrived, and the Normns took over. The peasants
probably did not notice much change, but cleared more
land. The chapel at East Walton was built, and then fell
into disrepair. The Church was built and stands today.
The landscape we look out upon at East Walton, as just about everywhere, has been
changed by our ancestors. Below our feet is the evidence of their existence, waiting
to tell us a part of their stories.
The Dig is 'Free' for all participants.

And Finally....

To all my wonderful Voice contributors: thank you for your support,

we couldn’t do the magazine without you. Enjoy your summer break
and I look forward to hearing from you all mid-August. Gina
