FUNDING INFORMATION FOR BRATHWAITE AWARDS RECIPIENTS

AT McMASTER UNIVERSITY

Brathwaite Awards will provide each successful recipient a maximum annual amount of up to, but not
exceeding $92,000 CAD. The award will be administered by the University and will cover the incurred
costs of the following:
- Tuition, residence room (double room) and meal plan*
- UHIP (health insurance coverage)
- Books and supplies up to an annual maximum of $1250
- Computer allowance of $700 (first year only)
- Co-op/internship fees where applicable – however, students participating in paid co-
op/internship positions are expected to cover their living costs during their co-op term

* For students living off-campus, disbursements for accommodation and food will be capped at the same levels as a shared double
room in residence and a regular meal plan.

The following costs will be considered on a by-request and case-by-case basis, with requests to be
addressed directly to the PETNA Foundation:
- Travel to Hamilton, Ontario at commencement of first year
- Emergencies/unexpected circumstances

The following costs are NOT covered by the Brathwaite Award:


- University application fees
- Student visa fees
- Travel following commencement of first-year
- Technology over and above first-year computer allowance
- Out-of-term accommodations (e.g., holiday breaks, post exams, early arrivals) for students
living in residence
- Summer courses (students are expected to maintain a full course load during Fall and Winter
terms)

For all recipients, payment will be made by the Foundation to McMaster University at the beginning of
each term (50% in September; 50% in January).

Please note: In the case of studies conducted exclusively online, a different funding model may apply
and may exclude funding for travel, accommodation, and food, based on individual circumstances.
