ASEAN OVERVIEW

HISTORY OF TOURISM IN SOUTHEAST ASIA

 Late 19th and early 20th centuries: Tourism in Southeast Asia is the result and reflection of the past
colonialism.
 Mid-1980s: Hospitality and tourism development reemerge and grow remarkably in Southeast Asia.
 Late 1980s: Tourism as one the key economic sectors in which the region has a comparative advantage and
which can quickly earn foreign currency.

REGIONALISM

A policy perspective that focuses on the importance of regional integration and promotes regional cooperation.
Itis defined as the multi-actor (state, market and people) led regional mechanisms and institutions (political,
economic and social institutions) with the goal of achieving common interests, vision and identity.

• Intergovernmental cooperation to achieve common interests through both institutionalization and socialization
processes.

• Aims to create a common sense of identity and destiny, combined with the creation of institutions that express
that identity and shape collective action.

• State, market and civil society organizations are the combined forces that create regional community and
identity.

Commonly known as ASEAN, established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the ASEAN
Declaration (Bangkok Declaration).

The ASEAN Anthem entitled the “ASEAN Way” is an expression of ASEAN unity. Mr.Kittikhun Sodprasert, Mr
Sampow Triudom, Mrs.Payom Valaipatchra composed the song.

ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC)

 Ensures that the peoples and Member States of ASEAN live in peace with one another and with the world
at large in a just, democratic, and harmonious environment.

ASEAN Economic Community (AEC)

 Transforms ASEAN into a stable, prosperous, and highly competitive region with equitable economic
development, and reduced poverty and socio- economic disparities.

ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC)

 Contributes to realizing an ASEAN Community that is people-oriented and socially responsible with a view
to achieving enduring solidarity and unity among the peoples and Member States of ASEAN.

ASEAN Charter

It also systematized A S E A N norms, rules, and values; sets clear targets for ASEAN; and presents accountability
and compliance. Has established new organs to boost the community-building process of ASEAN.
