Assignment 01 Building and Construction
Wood Joinery

1. Define Building and Construction. - Building and construction refer to the processes of planning, constructing,
and assembling structures and infrastructure, such as houses and offices, roads, and bridges. To bring conceptual
concepts to life, multiple specialists, including architects, engineers, and construction workers, must work
together. Building focuses on developing structures with defined areas, such as residential, commercial, and
industrial facilities, while ensuring that they are useful, safe, and aesthetically beautiful. Construction is a wide
phrase that encompasses not only the building of structures but also the development of critical infrastructure that
supports societal and economic processes. Both industries follow tight laws and standards to assure the safety,
durability, and environmental sustainability of built places and systems.

2. What do you mean by Modern Methods of Construction? - Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) are new
techniques and procedures that aim to increase efficiency, quality, and sustainability in the building sector. These
methods frequently include prefabrication and modular construction, in which building components or full
modules are created off-site and assembled on-site, considerably lowering construction time and waste. MMC
also incorporates the use of new materials and technologies, such as 3D printing and sustainable, energy-efficient
materials, to improve building performance and influence on the environment. Furthermore, digital tools like as
Building Information Modeling (BIM) play an important role in MMC by improving design cooperation,
construction planning, and project administration. Overall, MMC intends to solve typical construction difficulties
such as labor shortages, safety concerns, and the environmental impact of building projects.

3. Define Construction Methodology - Construction methodology refers to the methodical procedure used to
accomplish a construction project, describing the techniques, materials, and task sequencing required to meet the
project's objectives effectively and safely. It comprises thorough planning for how to approach each step of
building, from site preparation and foundation laying to structural component assembly and finishing work. This
technique is adjusted to each project's individual requirements, taking into account aspects such as project scope,
site circumstances, environmental effect, and regulatory compliance, to ensure successful project execution.

4. The Philippines is home to a diverse range of wood species, many of which are prized for their strength,
durability, and beauty, making them popular choices for construction and furniture-making. Here are some
notable examples of wood species from the Philippines used in construction:

 Narra (Pterocarpus indicus): Narra is considered the national tree of the Philippines and is
known for its durability and beautiful reddish color. It's often used for high-quality furniture,
paneling, and flooring.
 Tanguile (Shorea polysperma): Tanguile is a type of Philippine Mahogany that is commonly
used for interior applications, including doors, windows, and furniture. It is appreciated for its
workability and moderate resistance to termites.
 Molave (Vitex parviflora): Molave is highly valued for its strength and hardness, making it
suitable for heavy-duty construction like posts, bridges, and railroad ties. It is also resistant to
termite and fungal attacks.
 Kamagong (Diospyros blancoi): Kamagong, or "Philippine Ebony," is known for its extremely
dense and hard wood, making it ideal for furniture, decorative items, and martial arts weapons.
However, it is now rare and protected in many areas due to overharvesting.
 Yakal (Shorea astylosa): Yakal is recognized for its strength and durability, especially in wet
conditions, making it ideal for outdoor construction, such as posts, docks, and ships.
 Acacia (Acacia mangium and others): Acacia species in the Philippines are used for a wide
range of applications, including furniture, shipbuilding, and even as a reforestation species. They
are known for their fast growth and versatility.
 Ipil (Intsia bijuga): Ipil is another highly durable wood, resistant to both termites and rot,
making it suitable for a variety of construction purposes, including flooring, decking, and marine
applications.
 Gmelina (Gmelina arborea): Gmelina is a fast-growing species often used in reforestation
projects. It is used for light construction, furniture, and decorative veneers.
