ENTAMOEBA

HISTOLYTICA
INTRODUCTION

Anaerobic parasite
Predominantly infecting all primates
causing amoebiasis.
Discovered by Lambl in 1859 and Friedrick
Losch described its pathological nature.
Entos - within, amoeba - change, histos -
tissue, lysis - dissolve/disintergrate.
Monogenetic organism.
LIFE CYCLE OF ENTAMOEBA HISTOLYTICA
They are monogenetic. Pigs,
HOST dogs, rats, rabbits are reservoir
hosts.

Trophozoits undergo binary fision,

BINARY FISSION mitosis, cytokinesis invade the other
vital organ

Uninucleate condition, precystic forms

EXCYSTATION encyst in lumen of the intestine,
mitosis - binucleate - tetranucleate
Common sources - contaminated water, food,
TRANSMISSION veggies, fruits which has tetranucleate cyst.
Vectors - housefly, cockroach and other
coprophagous.

Cyst wall protects the cyst from gastric juice

in stomach, and trypsin in small intestine
ENCYSTATION digest the wall and releases the excystic
amoeba / metacyst.

Undergoes binary fission - metacystic

trophozoites / uninucleate amoebulae are
METACYST formed. They are uninucleate and 8 in
number. Develops into mature trophozoites.
PATHOGENIC PATHWAY
SMALL
MOUTH STOMACH INTESTINE

VECTORS AND VITAL

CONTAMINATED FAECES
ORGANS
FOOD
10% of the world population is suffering from amoebiasis.

Prone in rural and densely populated urban areas.

First culture of E.histolytica - Boeck Drbohlav.

Incubation period is 2 - 4 weeks.
