Question-1

No ball is called by the bowlers’ end umpire for over stepping. The
batsman plays a shot high in the air, the fielder at the boundary did
not notice the call of No ball and completes a fair catch well within
the boundary and in celebration throws the ball up which crosses
the boundary in full, at the instant of throw the batsmen have
crossed for the first run. How many runs are scored in this case?

ANSWER 1-1 run for no ball, 1 run for batsmen crossing plus
boundary 6 = 8 runs.

Questions-2

In a one day match the bowlers end umpire calls NO ball for foot
fault, the batsman plays a shot and takes a single. (both right
handers) The free hit follows the fielding captain maintains the
same field. The free hit ball is a wide, which results in a further free
hit ball. Now the fielding captain starts to make some adjustments
to his field. What would you as a bowlers end umpire do, if any?

Answer 2: The striker has not changed after the ball delivered which
was bowled wide. So field changes are not permitted for the follow-
ing delivery.

Question 4
The striker steps out to swing at a ball which brushes his pads
down the leg side and goes to the wicket-keeper who whips off the
bails. The batter continues his swinging motion of his bat and brings
it down hard on the ground, landing inside the crease behind him.
The bat bounces up at the moment the bails come off. The striker is
still on his feet outside the crease. How would you answer the ap-
peal?

Answer 4- Out-Stumped! since there was no running diving or


movement towards the crease or beyond it.

In a multiday match, on day 1, 91 overs were bowled. Day 2 at 2.15
pm a total of 143.3 overs bowled when an inning ended. Calculate
the number of overs for day 2 and also the timings?
Answer 5- Tea interval will be taken from 2.15 to 2.35
Timings for day 2, 2.35 to 4.30.
Minimum 37 overs for day two.

Question 6
A wicket falls and lunch is taken. During lunch the captain of the
fielding side wants to withdraw the appeal, is it allowed?
ANSWER 6- Yes, unless it is the last wicket of the innings.
1. What are the three scenarios in which the penalty time is not applicable
for a fielder absence?
A) Fielder absence is 8 minutes or less.

2. Can the head coach and captain of the batting side walk on the actual
match pitch at Drinks, Lunch and Tea interval?
A) Lunch and Tea Yes. (no spiked footwear is allowed)

many maximum bowlers can bowl the overs? Mention over numbers?

4. In a Men’s One Day match, the opening bowler A, had an extended spell
and was bowling his 8th over when there was an interruption, when
14.3 overs had been bowled. The match then had to be reduced to a 33
over game. On resumption, bowler A was warming up to complete his
over. The striker objected since bowler A had already completed more
than his quota of overs.
What will you as an Umpire? Will you allow the bowler to complete the
over?

Answer: The bowler (A) will be allowed to complete the over in this case
(even if his quota had been completed), since as per the BCCI Playing
Conditions a bowler shall finish an over in progress unless incapacitated
or suspended.
5. On the last day of a Ranji trophy match, game is interrupted due to bad
light at 14.55 hrs after 68 overs. Game resumes at 15.25 hrs. Use the
multi day template to calculate the rescheduled last hour.Scheduled last
hour is from1515 hrs.

6. A bowler on seeing the non striker out of his ground, before reaching his
release point makes his first attempt to run out the non striker with ball
in hand but misses the stump in his first attempt. In his second attempt
he takes the bail with his hand holding the ball.
a) on an appeal is the batsman out?
b) Can there be only one attempt or multiple attempts?
c) when does the dead ball law come to effect?

Answer:
a) Batsman is out.

b)The bowler can make multiple attempts to run the non striker out
provided the ball is held in his hand and the batsman is still outside the
crease as he is trying to dismiss the batsman.

c) The dead ball law gets effective, Once the ball has left his hand he
cannot make another attempt by gathering it.

7. The striker takes up his stance on the crease, the bowler in his run up
throws towards the striker wicket before entering his delivery stride. The
striker in his surprise back away. The ball hits the wicket. The striker is
on the crease with no part of his person behind it. He is not trying to
run. Could the striker be run out?

Answer: The ball is in play and the batsman is therefore out, Run out.

8. In a Ranji match, a fielder leaves the field for internal injury. He returns
after being off the field for 16 minutes, in which time there has been a
drinks interval, 2 minutes hold up for sight screen and 3 minutes hold up
for player injury. Does the bowler has to serve any penalty time before
he can bowl?

Answer: The bowler can bowl after 12 minutes.


9. The batsman is holding his batting gloves and helmet in his hands while
attempting for a run, the bat slips from his hand and he dives to reach
the crease. What is your decision in the following cases?
a. He manages to ground his helmet which is held in his hand behind
the popping crease just before the wicket is broken.

b. He manages to ground one of the gloves held in his hand behind


the popping crease just before the wicket is broken.
Answer:
a. Out, Run out
Reason: No item of clothing or equipment is part of the player’s person
unless it is attached to him.

b. Not Out
Reason: For a batsman, a glove being held but not worn is part of his
person

10. A) T20 match ends early at 11.55 in a Tie. (schedule close at 12.10),
What is the latest time a super over shall start or restart in case of
interruption?
A) Latest by 12.20 the super over shall start or resume. In case the super
over did not start by 12.20 or interrupted after 12.20 the result of the
match will be tie.

B) T20 match ends in a Tie at 12.15 pm. (schedule close at 12.10 pm),
what is the latest time the super over shall start?
A) 12.25.
ACA Umpires Quiz-3-Answers

1 A player is off the field for 160 minutes for an internal injury when the batting side is all out. He now
bats after the fall of 5 early wickets after 65 minutes of play. His team is all out in 95 minutes.

(a) If his team was asked to follow on, when can he bat again? (minutes)

Answer:any time after 25 minutes of playing time or after the fall of 5 wickets.

(b) If his team is fielding again, can he bowl immediately? If not when? (minutes)

Answer: No he has to wait 25 minutes of playing time.

(c) His team is asked to follow on, however after 10 minutes of playing time it rains for a period of
30 minutes. Within 5 minutes of the game restarting a wicket falls. Can the injured player now bat
or if not when (minutes) can he do so?

Answer: No he cannot bat for another 10 minutes or until 5 wickets fall. Unless he had informed
the umpire he was fit to bat at the start of interruption.

2 (9:00 to 12:30 – 1st session; 12:30 to 13:15 – Interval; 13:15 to 16:45 – 2nd Session)
In a one day match, play gets interrupted at 10:10 when 13 overs have been bowled and resumes at
10:25. As per the template the rescheduled closing time of first innings is 12:45 and the
commencement of second innings is 13:15. The innings of the team batting first ends at 12:55. When
shall the innings of team batting second commence and what will be the cessation time for the innings
of the team batting second?

Answer:

Innings of team batting second commences at 13:15 and the cessation time will be 16:45
Though this is an interrupted game and the first session extended beyond the rescheduled cessation
time and even though there are no reduction in overs, the interval will be reduced duration and the
next session will start as per timing.

3 In a multi-day match, on day two the grounds man informs you that the pitch mower is not working
and it will take at least 2 to 3 hours to repair or he informs you it will be ready by tomorrow morning.
What process will you follow?

Answer:

Umpires shall make an effort to arrange another mover, if all the effort fails, inform both the captains,
continue with the game and also inform the captains if a mover is made available on subsequent days
it will be used as per the law: 9.3.3.1.

4 8th wicket falls on the 3rd ball of the over (in the 4th innings) @11.58hr, on Day 3. As umpires are
about to call lunch, fielding captain approach the umpires for 15 minutes extension for achieving the
result.
a) When will the lunch be taken if No further wicket falls?
b) What will happen If only 1 wicket falls during the extra time?

Answer:
a)We will wait till the end of the over, extra time can be taken only at or after 12 pm & not before
that. Lunch will be taken after 15 mins from the actual time extra time started or min 4 overs
whichever is later.
b)Lunch will further be extended by 30 minutes when the extra time for result finishes or result is
reached whichever is earlier
5 In a T20 match, a bowler while running up to deliver the first ball of the over gets injured during the
run up and left the field. As Umpires what action will you take and what will be your communication
with Captains and Scorers?

Answer:

The Umpires will allow a new bowler to complete the over, who have neither bowled the previous
over or part thereof and will not be allowed to bowl the next over or part thereof.
Inform the fielding Captain and Scorers that the over will be counted for both the bowlers.

6 Bowler A bowls the 1st two balls of an over and gets incapacitated. He gets replaced by bowler B, who,
after delivering three more balls, was suspended and unable to complete that over. During this
period, Bowler A feels he has recovered and wants to complete the rest of an over. Can he bowl?

Answer:

Bowler A will be allowed to complete the over as he has neither bowled the previous over nor he will
be allowed to bowl the next over.

7 Third ball of an over which is a fair delivery is padded deliberately by the striker. Ball goes to mid-off
region and both cross for a single but the striker is run out at non strikers end. Who faces next
delivery?

Answer:

New incoming batsman will face the next delivery. (In case of leg byes not to be awarded return any
not out batsman to his original end).

8 On the final day of a multi day match, lunch was taken at 11.43a.m due to rain interruption and play
could resume only at 12.50 p.m. after lunch.Then there was another stoppage from 3.30 p.m. to 4.20
p.m. At this point of time, 63.3 overs had been bowled. When will the last hour commence? (Last day
scheduled start 9.15, last hour scheduled at 3.15) provide Calculations.

Answer:

A. Start of interruption 3.30pm


B. Min overs remaining before last hour 11 overs
C. Time required to bowl these overs 44 mins

9 On day 2 of a multiday match the sight screen breaks/falls down from one end. What process will you
follow in following situation?

a) The grounds man informs you it will take at least 2 hours.


A) See that the sight screen can be replaced /repaired promptly, if there is a delay
continue with the game and whenever the sight screen is made available allow it.
(keep both the captains informed of the proceedings)

b) The grounds man informs you it will be ready by next day.


A) Game should continue without the sight screen and whenever it is made available
accept it. (keep both captains informed of the proceedings)

10 The striker chops down on a ball which is called a no ball by bowler’s end umpire for a foot fault,
which then rebounds off the wicket-keeper, hits the slip fielder on the boot and bounces back to the
wicket-keeper who removes the bails with the striker just outside the crease not trying to run. The ball
has not touched the ground after it was first played by the striker. How do you as striker’s end umpire
answer the appeal?

Answer:

Out, run out as the ball has touched the slip fielder in the process.

1-9-20
1. You are at the bowler’s end in a T20 match which is
being played on a very quick pitch. The ball is
thrown to the very quick opening bowler for the first
over of the match. The wicketkeeper positions
himself on the 30-yard circle. There is a fielder at
3rd man and at fine leg. The captain enquires as to
whether the first slip fieldsman can take up a
position just outside the 30-yard circle. What is your
response?

Answer: Advise him that he needs to be inside the


circle as there are already two fielders outside the
circle.

2. On the last day of Multiday match, there is an


interruption from 14.45 to 15.30 after 67 overs. On
resumption, after further 1.2 overs were bowled
there is another interruption from 15.35 to 16.00.

3. The bowlers end umpire call no ball for foot fault.


The striker misses the ball and the ball breaks the
stumps at strikers end and rebounds and touches
the strikers bat and goes towards point region. The
batsmen run and complete one run;

a) How many runs are scored and under which

Answer: a) 2 runs. 1 run as no ball and 1 run to the


batsman.

b) Non striker will take strike for the next delivery.

5. A fair delivery hits the strikers helmet hard, which falls on the
ground very close to the stumps. The ball which is in play
starts rolling towards the wicket, in order to guard his wicket
the striker tries to kick the ball. What is your response in the
following scenarios?
a) He misses the ball and kicks the stumps and breaks the
wicket.
b) He kicks the ball which breaks the wicket.
c) He misses the ball and kicks the helmet, which breaks the
wicket.

Answer :
a) Out, hit wicket.
b) Out, bowled.
c) Out, hit wicket.

6. A fielder catches the ball and obtains complete


control over the ball to toss it in the air but continues
running further in the forward momentum and runs
and falls over the boundary. The ball falls inside the
boundary rope. The fielders celebrate for the wicket.
What would be your decision?

Answer : Although the fielder has control over the


ball but he has no control over his own movement.
Hence it’s not out but the ball is still in play.

7. Bowler absent for 7 mins when the inns comes to


an end & follow-on is enforced, thus requiring his
side to field again. He returns 6 mins after the start
of the new inns. When can he bowl?

Answer: Ignore both as each was less than the


“longer than 8 mins” – no penance penalty applies-
He can bowl any time.
8. Can the Captain of the Batting side declare his innings immediately
after taking heavy roller on the subsequent day morning. Does the
team need to play at least one ball after taking heavy roller?

Answer:Yes, the captain of the batting side can declare an


innings closed immediately after opting for heavy roller. It’s
not compulsory to play a ball after taking roller.

9. In a one day match, the bowler was officially warned twice for
bowling short pitched delivery above the shoulder height of the
batsman on the 1st and 4th delivery of the over. The last ball of
the over he bowls another short pitched delivery which the
striker standing upright at his crease tries to hook. The ball
clearly misses the bat and strikes the top of the helmet of the
batsman and goes up in the air towards fine leg, the fielder at
fine leg gathers the ball in full, close to the boundary, but
within. He then throws the ball up in celebration for a catch, at
this moment the batsmen who are running have crossed for the
second run. The bowlers end umpire now signals No ball (third
bouncer for the over). The ball that was thrown up in the air,
now lands well outside the boundary line. By this time the
batsmen have crossed for the third run.
State in full

(i) what signals you will make to the scorer?

A) No ball with tapping the head with the other hand. (third
bouncer for the over) Leg bye and boundary four followed by
free hit signal.

(ii) How many runs are scored and under which column?

A)1 run for no ball, 2 runs as leg byes for batsmen crossing at
the time of willful act, 4 runs as leg byes boundary, so a total of
7 runs. (communicate clearly to the scorer the number of runs
scored and under which column)

10. A player was off the field for 60 minutes when rain stops play at 1 PM. The
player immediately i.e. at 1 PM informs the umpires that he is fit to take field
when the game resumes. At 1.30 after inspection the umpires decide and
inform the captains that they are to resume the match at 2 PM. The batting
team captain in the meantime declares his sides innings at 1.50 PM. When
can the player who was off the field come and bat?

Answer:The innings break of 10 minutes will not count as playing time


for the player absence. (only addition is no overs will be reduced when an
interval occurs during the interruption) The player has to serve 10
minutes of penalty time.
