Search and Rescue

1. 24-hour basis.
2. Portion of areas or high seas shall be determined on basis of Regional Air Navigation Agreement.
3. Regions shall not overlap.
4. Indian government should provide Search and Rescue (SAR) over Indian Search and Rescue Region (SRR).
5. SAR services over land will be provided by National Aeronautical Search and Rescue Coordination Committee
(NASARCC). Chairman- Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation.
6. SAR services over sea will be provided by National Maritime Search and Rescue Board (NMSARB). Chairman-
Director General, Indian Coast Guard.
7. Airport Authority of India (AAI) coordinates SAR through 4 Coordination Centres – Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata &
Mumbai FIRs.
8. Indian Coast Guard has 3 Maritime Rescue Coordination Centres (MRCC) at Chennai, Mumbai & Port Blair as
promulgated in National Maritime Search and Rescue Manual.
9. Each SAR aircrafts when being used for SAR over maritime area should carry a copy of International Code of Signals.

b. Medical Aids - Red Streamer
c. Blanket and Protective clothing -Yellow Streamer
11. Vessels communicate to aircrafts on 2182 kHz and 4123 kHz.
12. PIC at the scene of Accident
a. Keep the craft in distress in sight until compelled to leave or advised by RCC.
b. Determine the position of craft in distress
c. Report RCC or ATC.
If first arriving aircraft, to the scene, is not a SAR aircraft then that aircraft shall take charge of on-scene activities
of all aircrafts arriving subsequently until first SAR aircraft arrives.
13. PIC intercepting a distress transmission.
a. Acknowledge
b. Record position
c. Take bearing of transmission
d. Inform RCC or ATC.
e. You may or may not proceed to position given in the transmission.
14. To direct a surface craft towards a craft in distress.
a. Circle the surface craft at least once.
b. Cross the projected course of the surface craft while
i. Rocking the wing.
ii. Opening and closing the throttle.
iii. Changing the propeller pitch.
c. Fly in the direction in which surface craft is to be directed.

d. When assistance is no longer is required, Cross the wake of the surface craft while
i. Rocking the wing.
ii. Opening and closing the throttle.
iii. Changing the propeller pitch.

15. Satellite-Aided SAR


a. COSPAS/SARSAT is Satellite aided tracking syatem.
b. Operates on 406 MHz.
c. Location accuracy within 5km.
d. 2 Local User Terminal – Banglore – Lucknow, with Indian Mission Control Centre (INMCC), Banglore.
e. INMCC is connected to RCC. Any distress signal will be automatically transmitted to RCC.
