DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS AND ABO BLOOD GROUP GENOTYPE

AMONG COMPUTER VISION SYNDROME PATIENTS IN KEBBI STATE

CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

In the twenty-first century, the wide spread use of computers has become an integral part of daily
life. Whether in the work place, academia, or leisure, computer devices have revolutionized how
we interact with information and perform tasks.
However, this increased reliance on screens has also lead to an emergence of computer vision
syndrome (CVS), a collection of visual discomfort symptoms associated with prolonged
computer use. CVS encompasses a range of visual discomfort symptoms experienced by
individuals who spend prolong hours working on computers, tablets, or smartphones. These
symptoms include eye strain, blurred vision, dry eyes, headaches and neck pains . The prevalence
of CVS has been increasing in recent years due to the widespread use of digital devices in both
professional and personal settings. As our dependence on digital devices continue to grow,
understanding the factors contributing to CVS becomes crucial to public health managements.
Understanding the risk factors associated with CVS, including demographic characteristics play a
significant role in the development and severity of CVS. Factors such as age, gender, occupation, and
socioeconomic status can influence an individual's risk of developing CVS. Additionally, genetic factors
such as blood group genotype may also play a role in the development of CVS.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the increasing prevalence of CVS, there is limited research on the demographic characteristics
and blood group genotype of individuals affected by the condition. Understanding the demographic
profile of CVS patients can help healthcare providers tailor treatment and prevention strategies to specific
populations.

Additionally, investigating the role of blood group genotype in the development of CVS may provide
valuable insights into the underlying mechanisms of the condition.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The primary objective of this study is to investigate the demographic characteristics and blood group
genotype of individuals diagnosed with Computer Vision Syndrome in Kebbi State. Specific objectives
include:

1. To determine the age distribution of CVS patients in Kebbi State.

2. To assess the gender distribution of CVS patients in Kebbi State.

3. To examine the occupation and socioeconomic status of CVS patients in Kebbi State.

4. To investigate the prevalence of different blood group genotypes among CVS patients in Kebbi State

1.4 Research questions\hypothesis

 How do demographic characteristics and blood group genotypes relate to the prevalence of
computer vision syndrome among patients in kebbi state?

 What are the demographic characteristics of patients diagnosed with Computer Vision Syndrome
in Kebbi State?

 What is the distribution of blood group genotypes among individuals with Computer Vision
Syndrome in Kebbi State?

 We hypothesized that certain demographic characteristics, such as age, gender, occupation and
educational level as well as blood group genotype, may be associated with an increased risk of
developing computer vision syndrome among patients in kebbi state.

1.5 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it will provide valuable information on the demographic characteristics and
blood group genotype of individuals affected by Computer Vision Syndrome in Kebbi State. The findings
from this research can inform healthcare professionals, policymakers, and the general public about the
risk factors associated with CVS and help in developing targeted interventions for prevention and
management. Additionally, the study may contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the role of
genetic factors in the development of CVS and serve as a basis for further research in this area.

1.6 Scope of the Study

This study will be conducted in Kebbi State, Nigeria, and will focus on individuals diagnosed with
Computer Vision Syndrome. The study will include patients of all ages and genders who have been
diagnosed with CVS by a healthcare provider. Data on demographic characteristics such as age, gender,
occupation, and socioeconomic status will be collected through interviews and medical records. Blood
group genotype information will be obtained through blood tests conducted as part of the study.
1.7 Organization of the Thesis

The thesis will be structured into five chapters, as follows:

o Chapter 1: Introduction

o Chapter 2: Literature Review

o Chapter 3: Methodology

o Chapter 4: Results and Discussion

o Chapter 5: Conclusion and Recommendations

This chapter provides an overview of the research topic, highlighting the background, problem statement,
objectives, research questions\hypothesis, scope, and organization of the study. Subsequent chapters will
delve deeper into the existing literature, research methodology, findings, and implications of the study.
