Identification Of Our Rights And Duties Towards Others
In The Light Seerah Of Prophet (S.A.W)
Introduction
In the light of the Seerah of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W), there are several examples and
teachings that guide Muslims in understanding their rights and duties towards others. These
teachings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) are recorded as Quran and Hadith.

Rights towards Others

1. Right to Life and Security:
The right to life is fundamental and serves as the foundation for all other human rights.
Without the protection of life, other rights lose their meaning and value. This includes not
only the right to exist but also the right to safety, dignity, privacy, and freedom.

The Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) emphasized the importance of human life. He protected the
lives of individuals, no matter their faith or background.

The Quran states,

“Whoever kills a person [unjustly]... it is as though he has killed all mankind.” (Quran 5:32)

The Prophet (S.A.W) established laws and treaties to ensure the safety and security of all
members of society, promoting peace and harmony.

These instructions have been repeated in the Holy Quran in another place saying,

“Do not kill a soul which Allah has made sacred except through the due process of law.”
(Quran 6:151)

2. Right to Respect and Dignity:

The Prophet (S.A.W) taught his followers to treat everyone with respect and honor,
regardless of their social status.

Muslims are instructed to avoid arrogance and pride, and to interact with humility and
kindness towards all individuals.

In Quran,
“O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule (another) people; perhaps they may be
better than them...” (Quran 49:11)

3. Right to Justice and Fairness:

The Prophet (S.A.W) ensured that individuals received their due rights and that justice was
upheld even in the face of adversity.

He established courts and appointed judges to adjudicate disputes, ensuring that everyone had
access to a fair trial.

In Quran,

“O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even
if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives...” (Quran 4:135)

4. Right to Freedom and Autonomy:

The Prophet (S.A.W) granted freedom to individuals and communities to practice their
religion and live according to their beliefs.

He abolished slavery and advocated for the liberation and fair treatment of slaves,
emphasizing the equality of all people before God.

"There shall be no compulsion in (acceptance of) the religion..." (Quran 2:256)

The Prophet (S.A.W) said,

"Whoever frees a Muslim slave, Allah will save all the parts of his body from the (Hell) Fire
as he has freed the body-parts of the slave." (Sahih Bukhari)

5. Right to Property and Wealth:

The Prophet (S.A.W) recognized the rights of individuals to own and possess property. He
prohibited theft and upheld the sanctity of private property.

Muslims are encouraged to be charitable with their wealth and to support those in need, but
they must also respect the property rights of others.

"And do not consume one another's wealth unjustly..." (Quran 4:29)

The Prophet (S.A.W) said,

"The property of a Muslim is not lawful (to take) except by his permission." (Sahih Muslim)

6. Right to Privacy and Confidentiality:

The Prophet (S.A.W) respected the privacy of individuals and prohibited spying or
eavesdropping on others without their consent.

Muslims are encouraged to maintain the confidentiality of personal matters and to refrain
from gossip or slander.

The Prophet (S.A.W) said,

"Beware of suspicion, for suspicion is the worst of false tales; and do not look for the others'
faults and do not spy, and do not be jealous of one another..." (Sahih Bukhari)

7. Right to Education and Knowledge:

The Prophet (S.A.W) emphasized the importance of seeking knowledge and education. He
said, "Seeking knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim."

Muslims are encouraged to pursue education and to facilitate the education of others,
promoting lifelong learning and intellectual development.

The Prophet (S.A.W) said,

"Seeking knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim." (Sunan Ibn Majah)

Duties towards Others

1. Duty of Kindness and Compassion:
The Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) exemplified kindness and compassion in his interactions
with others, showing mercy and empathy towards all individuals.

Muslims are encouraged to follow his example by showing kindness and compassion towards
their fellow human beings, including family, friends, neighbors, and strangers.

The Prophet (S.A.W) said,

"The most beloved of people to Allah are those who are most beneficial to people." (Sahih
Bukhari)
2. Duty of Justice and Fairness:
Muslims are obligated to uphold justice and fairness in all aspects of their lives, treating
others with equity and impartiality.

They are encouraged to stand up against injustice and oppression, advocating for the rights of
the oppressed and marginalized members of society.

The Prophet (S.A.W) said,

"The believers are like a single body; if one part is afflicted with pain, the whole body feels
it." (Sahih Muslim)

3. Duty of Charity and Generosity:

The Prophet (S.A.W) emphasized the importance of giving to those in need and supporting
the less fortunate members of society.

Muslims are required to give to charity (zakat) and to engage in acts of kindness and
generosity towards others, sharing their blessings with those who are less fortunate.

4. Duty of Honesty and Integrity:

Muslims are expected to be honest and trustworthy in all their dealings, following the
example of the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) who was known for his honesty and integrity.

They should uphold their commitments and fulfill their promises, avoiding deceit and fraud
in their interactions with others.

The Prophet (S.A.W) said,

"Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise..." (Sahih

Muslim)

5. Duty of Respect and Consideration:

Muslims are instructed to respect the rights and feelings of others, treating them with
courtesy, consideration, and empathy.

They should avoid causing harm or offense to others and should strive to foster mutual
respect and understanding in their relationships.

"O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be
better than them..." (Quran 49:11)
The Prophet (S.A.W) said,

"The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, while there
is good in both..." (Sahih Muslim)

6. Duty of Brotherhood/Sisterhood:
The Prophet (S.A.W) emphasized the importance of unity and solidarity among Muslims,
promoting a sense of brotherhood/sisterhood and mutual support.

Muslims are encouraged to care for one another, to assist those in need, and to build strong,
supportive communities based on love and compassion.

The Prophet (S.A.W) said,

"None of you will have faith till he wishes for his (Muslim) brother what he likes for himself."
(Sahih Bukhari)

7. Duty of Dawah (Invitation):

Muslims have a duty to convey the message of Islam to others with wisdom, kindness, and
good conduct, following the example of the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) who conveyed the
message of Islam through his words and actions.

They should strive to be positive ambassadors of their faith, inviting others to Islam through
their exemplary behavior and character.

"Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a
way that is best..." (Quran 16:125)

The Prophet (S.A.W) said,

"Convey from me, even if it is one verse." (Sahih Bukhari)
