This document is a poster entitled We can do it !.

It was made by Miller in 1943

during WW2. It refers to women who had to work in ammunition factories in war time.

In the poster, we can see a strong woman who looks determined. She shows her
strong and muscled arm. She is wearing a red and white headband and a blue
ammunition factory shirt. But she is also wearing nail polish and make-up.
This detail is symbolic: it shows that women are as strong as men because they do
men’s jobs when men are at war. It refers to the stereotype that men are strong whereas
women are weak. The make-up shows that they preserve their identity: they are women.

The Second World War underlined the fact that women’s role in society was
important and necessary. It can be considered as the beginning of nowadays’ feminist
movements. Women have had to fight for gender equality.
