Hello and welcome to this English Online

series. My name is Nishma and together

we're going to look at the English you'll use in
the workplace, in your social life, and just the
English you need for life in general. Let's go.

All right, so we are talking about what

science says about dating and learning
English. So, the first question is, do you use
dating websites? Maybe you've used them in
the past, maybe you're using them right now.

But either way, last year we did a little bit of

research on what science says about dating
and the findings were really interesting. So,
the main kind of takeaway for us was that a
lot of the chemistry or kind of initial interest
is based on language rules.

But either way, last year we did a little bit of

research on what science says about dating
and the findings were really interesting. So,
the main kind of takeaway for us was that a
lot of the chemistry or kind of initial interest
is based on language rules.

So, we've written a blog post on this, which

you can read once you've listened to this
episode, but here are some of the main
findings. So, the first one is that spelling
mistakes and using incorrect grammar is not
attractive.

Apparently, two studies published in 2019

found that people who had profiles with
spelling mistakes were less attractive than
profiles without spelling mistakes.

So, if you're looking to create a profile in a

dating app, make sure you double check your
spelling, especially if you've written in
English.
Okay, finding number two is quite an
interesting one. It's called the 70:30 Rule. So,
researchers have discovered a simple rule for
writing online dating profiles and it's called
the 70:30 Rule.

It comes from a study published in 2015 in

the British Medical Journal and it found that if
you want to create the most effective dating
profile, around 70% of it should be about you
and 30% should explain what you're looking
for in somebody else.

So, you could say something like, hi, I'm

Jamie. I love to have a good conversation
with a glass of red wine, and I absolutely love
staying at home for a good meal and reading
a book on a Saturday afternoon.

I am looking for someone who's a little bit

more adventurous, a rock climber maybe, but
who also loves to cook at home. I don't know
about you, but I find it refreshing when you
read something that's not just about the
person writing it. Okay, let's move on to
learning number four.

Did you know that writing a good dating

profile is actually a good writing exercise?
Because not only are you looking out for
spelling and grammar mistakes, which we
saw in point one, but you also need to be
concise and humorous.
And these are both very difficult to do when
writing. Studies have shown that dating
profiles that use simple language, that are
easy to read and that include a little bit of
humour are more likely to get people
interested.

It also found that readers who find your

profile text attractive are more likely to find
your profile picture attractive.

I find that quite interesting. What you write

influences how people see your profile
picture, for good or for bad. So, when you
write your dating profile, keep it simple, and
if you can add humour, it can give you an
.advantage

Being funny is more attractive than simply

saying you're funny. So, in the blog post,
there are three or four more findings that
have been outlined, so if you want to learn
