ANOTHER GERMAN SUCCESS STORY
/5
A recent newspaper story in Britain showed a surprising
fact. It said that the big four supermarkets in Britain
are losing customers to smaller, cheaper, often German,
supermarkets. However, people aren’t only using them to
save money. That might have been the reason they went
there to start with but, when they actually shop there, they
are often shocked to find that the products are as good as
or even better than the famous brands they used to buy.
The shops don’t advertise much on television or in the
newspapers but they don’t have to. Happy customers
have spread the news to friends and neighbours. It’s
not surprising. You can find everything you have always
bought and have enough money left over to buy yourself
a few extra treats as well.
2
FAST FOOD FOR FUSSY EATERS
One of the most surprising new developments in eating
out has been the rise of the gourmet burger. These are
similar to the burgers that most people eat – served in a
bun, greasy and full of calories. However, they are much
more expensive. A good gourmet burger uses the best
beef along with a choice of other ingredients and sauces.
Everything is freshly prepared and, if you have chips
you know that they are made from the best potatoes,
peeled and cut in the restaurant, not bought frozen. A
recent newspaper article stated that gourmet burgers
have become increasingly popular in major cities where
there are many highly-paid workers who still want fast
food but are able to pay extra for something fresher and
more tasty. However, don’t imagine that they are a low-
fat alternative to traditional fast food. They aren’t.

life during the holiday season. There can be noise and
anti-social behaviour and, occasionally, communities can /6
be completely destroyed if, for example, land becomes so
valuable that people are forced to leave their homes so
that more hotels and restaurants can be built.
Finally, even if governments create protected areas,
there is more traffic on the roads outside which leads
to pollution which can affect the plants in the national
parks. Also, the high number of tourists means a
significant increase in the demand for water. This means
less water flows into rivers, which dry up causing plants
and animals to die.
As can be seen, although governments are trying hard to
act more responsibly than in the past, the huge numbers
of tourists now travelling every year is causing problems
that it may be impossible to solve.
