Discuss how you would organise and effectively conduct an S4 practical lesson of 80
minutes on enzyme activity in a class of 120 students.
Activities before the lesson
Identification of the learning objectives for example I can identify temperature as the
property of enzymes to be investigated.
I plan on how to divide the class for example I can split the class into smaller groups of 5
students which allows foe closer supervision and hands on participation.
Teacher and lab technician prepare the solutions and materials to be used during the lesson
for example starch substrate, enzymes like amylase, reagents for food testing etc.
Teacher and lab Attendant can pre-measure the solutions into beakers for each group to
minimise time wastage during the experiment.
Teacher and lab Attendant set up multiple stations in the laboratory, each station having the
required materials like test tubes, beakers, hot water bath, stop clock etc.
Teacher prepares detailed instructions and as well outlines the steps of the experiment
including safety precautions .
Teacher allocates areas of waste disposal.
Teacher secures a first aid kit to provide assistance to learners who may get harm during the
experiment.
DURING THE LESSON
Teacher introduces the lesson and also provides a safety briefing. The introduction can
involve a whole class discussion on enzymes and their role in biological systems.
Teacher groups Learners into groups of 5 people.
Teacher assigns each group a station where the groups are going to work from and shares the
instructions and encourages learners to start the experiment.
As students work, teacher supervises and as well guides challenged learners.
Teacher encourages learners in groups to make correct observations like colour changes and
as well encourage them to discuss their findings.
Once all the groups have completed, teacher brings back the class together and facilitates a
discussion where each group shares their observations.
Teacher guides learners on identifying the trends for example how enzyme activity varies
with temperature.
Teacher summarises the key take aways from the experiment, reinforcing the concept of
enzyme activity and factors affecting it.
Teacher collects the data sheets as formative assessment.
Teacher allocates instructions for clean up of the apparatus used.
