Homework Assignment #03

3.1. A proton’s speed as it passes point A is 50,000 m/s. It follows the trajectory shown in Figure
3.1. What is the proton’s speed at point B?

3.2. Three electrons form an equilateral triangle 1.0 nm on each side. A proton is at the center of the
triangle. What is the potential energy of this group of charges?

3.3. Two spherical drops of mercury each have a charge of 0.10 nC and a potential of 300 V at the
surface. The two drops merge to form a single drop. What is the potential at the surface of the
new drop?

3.4. Figure 3.4 shows a graph of V versus x in a region of space. The potential is independent of y
and z. What is Ex at (a) x = -2 cm, (b) x = 0 cm, and (c) x = 2 cm?

3.5. Metal sphere 1 has a positive charge of 6.0 nC. Metal sphere 2, which is twice the diameter of
sphere 1, is initially uncharged. The spheres are then connected together by a long, thin metal
wire. What are the final charges on each sphere?
