In the following I will analyse the short story The Black Cat written by Edgar Allen Poe and

published in1843.

The Black Cat" by Edgar Allan Poe takes place indoors, within the narrator's house. There it takes
place in various rooms within the house such as the narrator's bedroom, the cellar, and the main
living spaces. The precise location is not mentioned, but it seems to be in an urban area, because
there are neighbours

The lenght of the story is not stated, but it appears to take place over a period of several years,
because we see the narrator have a change in character. There is mentioning of sunlight streaming
into the house.

Edgar Allen Poe often used nouns for domestic objects, such as "house," "chamber," "cellar," and
"bedroom,".
Verbs used by Poe are often extremely emotional, to describe the narrator's madness: "murder,"
"strangle," "maul," and "destroy". Those word highlight the violence and aggression present in the
story, while also giving us a hint of the narrators physiological craziness.
Lots of Adjectives were used to create a vivid short story, making the reader believe it is
happening in real time.
Edgar Allen Poe describes the killings and the corpses in great detail creating a dark and eerie
atmosphere.

In this short story the narrator is being the most developed character. He remains relatively static
throughout the story, as his personality does not change.
The emotional state of the narrator on the other hand does change dramatically throughout the
story. He experiences feelings of love and a ection towards animals and his wife. But later turns
angry, mad, aggressive until he then feels guilt. His emotional state is unstable which leads to a
violent behaviour and to the killings.
The narrators actions would not have changed if the setting was di erent.

In conclusion, Edgar Allen Poe, by using a lot of adjectives and dark words, creates the setting,
characters and language, which appear dark and oppressive resulting in an overall negative
atmosphere.
