A sampling of the types of problems that usually appear in the admission tests

Type 1: Work problems

1. A does a job in 6 days, while B can do the same job in 4 days. How long will it take A & B
working together to finish the same job?

2. Jack can do a piece of job in 12 days. With Bill’s help, he can finish the job in 8 days, how long

Type 2: Tank Problems

1. Two taps can fill an empty tank in 20 minutes and 30 minutes respectively. A third pipe can
drain a full-tank in 15 minutes. If all three pipes are opened at the same time. How long will it
take to fill an empty tank?

2. Two taps can fill an empty tank in 20 minutes and 30 minutes respectively. A third pipe can
drain a full-tank in 5 minutes. If a tank is full, and all three pipes are opened together, how long

Type 3 Ratio & Proportion

1. A painting with dimensions 5 feet x 8 feet is to be miniaturized. If the smaller side of the
painting is reduces to 6 inches, what will be the length of the longer side?

2. A man distributes his property to his three sons A, B & C in the ratio of 2:3:5 respectively. If B

Type 4: Man-days (Inverse Relations)

1. A family of 6 people is marooned on an Island, and has enough food for 30 days. After ten days,
two men drowned. How long after this unhappy event would the remaining food last the
remaining people?

Type 6: Percentages

1. A dress was sold for $ 1,500 after a discount of 25%. What was the original price of the dress?

2. If A sell a good costing $200 to B at a profit of 20 % and B sold the same good to C at a profit of
30%, What was the price paid by C?

3. The price of gold increase by 30% in one week, and decreases by 40% in the next week. What is
the net percentage change in price over the 2-week period?

4. The base of a triangle is increased by 30% and the height of the same triangle is decreased by
10%. What is the percentage change in the area of triangle?

5. George and Ben are the only competitors in an election, Ben gets 52% of the votes, and wins by a

6. A painting is sold at a discount of 30% and still gives a profit of $20,000. If it had been sold at a

1. Five men have an average weight of 150lbs. Three boys have an average weight of 60 lbs. What

Type 8: Weighted Average

2. Brand A coffee costs $5/Kg and Brand B costs $8/Kg. A mixture with an average cost of $6.8/Kg
is made by mixing Brand A and Brand B. if a total 20 Kg of coffee are used, how many Kg of
Brand B is used?

Type 9: Mixture

1. In a 30 ounces solution, 40 percent is alcohol. If 30 ounces of water is added to the solution, what
percent f the new solution is alcohol?

2. A 50-gallon mixture contains 90% paint and 10% thinner. How many gallons of thinner should be
added to this mixture to decrease the percentage concentration of paint of 75%?

Type 10: Fractions & Remainders

1. A man spends 2/5 of his salary on travel. He spends 1/3 of the remainder on food. If he has $200
left over, what was his salary?

2. David spends 3/8 of his salary on food, and 4/9 of the remainder on the utility bills. He then
spends 2/5 of the further remainder on travel and saves the rest. If he earns a salary of $7,200.
What amount does he save?

Type 11: Consecutive Numbers

1. The sum of four consecutive numbers is 102. What is the smallest number in this set?

1. A sales man has a basic salary of $2,000. He gets 15% commission on all sales above $10,000.
If he sells above $100,000, he gets an extra bonus of $1,000. In one month, if he sells good

Type 16: Age Problems
