Intro
What are silent syllables?
A syllable is a part of a word that contains a single vowel sound and that is pronounced as a unit.
There are some syllables that are said to be silent. They are to be seen but not tobe read.
Silent syllables are common in words of three or more syllables where there is a weak vowel sound
followed by one of /l/, /r/ or /n/. Both pronunciations of these words are correct, though in connected
speech, the silent syllable is more likely in most cases.
