Aim: Design and Implementation of SMPS of 24 V @ 2.5A for

water purifier with suitable Input DC voltage.

Problem Statement: -
Switch mode power supply with outputs of 24VOLTS, 2.5 AMP. For this reason, I
have used PI-Expert software to design smps supply circuit. I have implemented this
Circuit on PCB as prototype for Eureka water purifier.

Specifications: -
Input Voltages: 100 - 300VAC

Input Current: 500mA

Input Frequency: 47HZ - 64HZ

Output Load 23.00V - 24.20VDC
Regulation:
Output Voltages: 24.00V DC

Output Current: 2.50Amp

Component Selection:
1. Capacitors (EPCOS Capacitor):

The capacitors cover a voltage range from 10 V DC to 600 V DC and maximum temperatures of 85° C to
140° C.The permissible rated voltage increased from 550 V DC to 600 V DC. Covering a capacitance
range from 680 µF to 6800 µF, the highly compact components are designed for temperatures up to 85°
C. A new snap-in series (B43541*) for temperatures up to 85° C, offers a rated voltage of 600 V DC
instead of the previous 550 V DC, and features capacitance values of between 47 µF and 270 µF.

2. PTC Thermistors:

In comparison to the NTC thermistors previously mentioned, positive temperature coefficient (PTC)
thermistors provide protection from current surges, such as those that occur as a result of a short
circuit. At excessive currents, these components heat up and acquire a high resistance. As with ICLs,
they are inserted directly into the current path of the power input. The B5910*J series spans commonly
used current levels and are available in leaded or packaged versions.
3. variable resistors (Varistor):

Varistors are voltage-dependent resistors whose resistance decreases with increasing voltage.
Connected in parallel with the electronic device, or circuit that is to be protected, a varistor forms a low-
resistance shunt when voltage increases. Common overvoltage sources include lightning, inductive load
switching and electrostatic discharge (ESD).

4. EMC and Transient Protection:

EMC and transient protection is delivered via a broad range of EPCOS X- and Y-capacitors and common-
mode chokes.

5. High-performance and Compact Inductors (ferrite core inductors):

ferrite core inductors saturate faster but are lower cost and have lower core losses.

Design Calculations:
Maximum AC input power is determined by the VOCV, IOCC, and full-load efficiency targets. Primary
output:

VOUT = VOCV = 24 V

The converter is designed for 2.5 A of maximum output current on primary output and is designed to
limit the current at 2.5 A for overload conditions. So, IOCC = 2.5 A.

Total maximum output power need is,

Pout = Vout * Iocc

= 24* 2.5

=60W

To calculate component specifications, the minimum targeted efficiency is considered as η =85 %. Pin

= (Pout ÷ η) = (60.0 ÷0.85) = 70.6 W

provides an accurate solution for input capacitance needed to achieve a minimum bulk valley voltage
target VBULK (min). Alternatively, if a given input capacitance value is prescribed, one can calculate the
VBULK (min) expected for that capacitance.

Conclusion: -
Switch mode power supplies, SMPS provide improved efficiency & space
saving over traditional linear supplies, but care has to be taken to
ensure noise on the output is low. From experiments conducted on
Switch Mode Power Supply (SMPS) and experienced output voltage is
24v at 2.5 amp which is used for water purifier.
