Life expectancy for people living in Mexico increased from 48 years to


74 years between 1950 and 2000. It is projected to continue to increase,
with life expectancy in 2050 expected to be 80 years.

(d) ‘The ability to predict volcanic eruptions accurately would result in fewer negative impacts
on local people.’ How far do you agree with this statement? Give examples to support your

4 (a) (i) Explain two processes of coastal erosion. [4]

(ii) Study Fig. 4.1 (Insert), a photograph which shows a sea stack on the coast of Ireland.

Explain how the sea stack shown in Fig. 4.1 was formed. You may use a diagram or
diagrams to support your answer. [5]

(iii) Describe and explain how the sea stack in Fig. 4.1 may change in the future. [3]

(b) (i) Study Fig. 4.2, an extract describing one type of weathering.

The statue has been damaged due to the slightly acidic rainwater,
which is dissolving the rock much faster than in recent years.

(iii) Describe the similarities and differences in the rank order of the top five energy producer

(iv) Suggest reasons to explain why some countries have a higher energy consumption than
other countries. [3]

(c) (i) Define the term carbon footprint. [2]

(ii) ‘The most effective ways of reducing carbon footprints are to improve public transport
and limit air travel.’ To what extent do you agree with this statement? Give examples to
support your answer. [7]
