STOWAGE EXERCISE

HART/7FSI/STOWEX2
CARGO STOWAGE EXERCISE
The objective of this exercise is to show you the problems that may be encountered when
identifying materials carried on a chemical tanker.
For each material try to identify the material using the following procedure:

1. Check whether it is in the List of Oils, Appendix 1 to Annex I of MARPOL.

2. If it is on the List of Oils, consider whether it may contain more than 10% of
Benzene (see IBC Code).

3. If there is an abbreviation, ask the shipper to identify the material properly (and to provide a
Materials Safety Data Sheet).

4. Look for the Material in the Index of Dangerous Chemicals (at back of IBC Code) and follow the
directions which may replace the given “‘name” by a “CORRECT TECHNICAL NAME”. Follow
the directions again to note the UN Number and whether material belongs in Chapter 17 (if it is
a Dangerous Chemical), or to Chapter 18 (if it is another Chemical).

5. Refer to the columns of Chapter 17 or Chapter 18 for detailed requirements.

You should be able to fill in the Exercise columns headed:
Correct Technical Name
UN Number
IMO Ship Type
Pollution category and
Special requirements.

6. The Tank Coating Compatibility (with each cargo parcel) is checked by the ship’s staff using a
Cargo/Coating Compatibility List prepared by the Tank Coating manufacturer.

7. Carriage and Unloading Temperature requirements are normally provided by the Shipper.
Approximate values are obtainable from Cargo data Sheets. Viscosity and melting Point
Information may be required for Pollution Control purposes, in which case the information will be
available in the ship’s Procedures and Arrangements (P&A) Manual.

8. Compatibility between a cargo and water or air is given in cargo data sheets, and may be
referred to via the special requirements column of Chapter 17.
Chapter 17 also has a column to indicate, where appropriate, that lnerting is
required.

9. Compatibility between cargo parcels is given by the USCG Guide to Compatibility of Cargoes,
from the Chemical Data Guide for Bulk Shipment by Water (and the latest 46 CFR 150). A copy
is available in Appendix 8 of the Course Notes.
Follow the procedure EXACTLY: in particular, look up the “Chemical Family” in the USCG List,
not the IMO Index! Do not neglect to look at footnotes, if advised.
Having identified the Cargo in its USCG Chemical Family, go to the compatibility table (“Mileage
Chart”) and check whether the cargoes are compatible.

10. Find the US Government website (hint: 46 CFR 150) to check on up-to-date exceptions to
Figure 1, the Compatibility Chart.

1. OBTAIN CORRECT TECHNICAL NAME / UN NUMBER (INDEX IN IBC CODE)

2. IN IBC CODE, LOOK UP

POLLUTION CATEGORY, IMO SHIP TYPE, and SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS,
including:-
• Not next to Ship's Shell or Water Ballast (eg Mineral Acids)
• As above for (Category B, MP ≥ 15°C).

3. LOOK UP USCG GROUP AND NOTES

4. CHECK ABOVE BY NOTING ALLOWED TANKS ON CERTIFICATE OF FITNESS

5. LOOK AT CARGO DATA SHEETS FOR BOILING POINT, HEATING REQUIREMENTS,

POLYMERISATION PROBLEMS etc.

6. CHECK SHIPPING DOCUMENTS FOR VISCOSITY AND MELTING POINTS

(POLLUTION)

7. CHECK ABOVE USING THE SHIP'S

PROCEDURES AND ARRANGEMENTS MANUAL

8. LOOK UP TANK COATING COMPATIBILITY

9. CHECK LAST CARGO COMPATIBILITY
