FOR EACH OF ITS SHIPS TO DEMONSTRATE THAT THE SHIPS OPERATE IN COMPLIANCE WITH SOLAS C HAPTER XI-2
AND THE RELEVANT PARTS OF THE ISPS CODE .

b. Define a Special Area under the IMO MARPOL 73/78 Convention
A.
Special area means a sea area where for recognised technical reasons in relation to its
oceanographical and ecological condition and to the particular character of its Traffic  the
adoption of mandatory methods for the prevention of sea pollution by oil is required.
 
c. State the conditions that must be applied under Annex I MARPOL 73/78 with respect to the discharge
of oil or oily mixture residue from cargo, into any part of the sea from an oil tanker.

A. Any discharge into the sea of oil or oily mixture from ships to which this Annex applies is
prohibited except when all the following conditions are satisfied :-

 For an Oil Tanker,


1 The tanker is not within a special area;
2 The tanker is more than 50 miles from the nearest land;
3 The tanker is proceeding en route;
4 The instant rate of discharge of oil content does not exceed 30 litres per nautical mile.
5 The total quantity of oil discharged into the sea does not exceed 1/30,000 of the total quantity of the
particular cargo of which the residue formed a part; and
6 The tanker has in operation an (ODMCS ) Oil discharge monitoring and control system and a slop tank
arrangement as required by regulation 15 of this Annex.
d. State two of the air pollutants mentioned in Marpol annex VI. What mitigation measures have taken
place so far regarding these pollutants?
