Goal

Your goal is to produce an estimate for the total cost of installing a pool for a customer of your boss'
landscaping business.

Role

You have been asked to compute the radius, diameter, and volume of the pool to be installed. Then
use that information to produce an estimate.

Audience

Your target audience is your boss.

Situation

The challenge involves dealing with a given equation to compute measurements for a pool then
researching prices to produce an estimate.

Product, Performance, and Purpose

You will create an estimate in order to assist your boss in gaining the job! The equation that is given
by the customer for the pool is (units are in feet):

𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 = 81
Standards and Criteria for Success

Your performance needs to include the following calculations:

• Compute the radius and diameter of the pool.

𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 = 92

𝑥2 + 𝑦2 = 𝑟2
𝑟 = 9 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑡
𝑑
𝑟=
2
𝑑 = 2𝑟
𝑑 =2×9
𝑑 = 18𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑡

Compute the volume of water in the pool using the above calculations and a height of 4 ft.

ℎ = 4𝑓𝑡

𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 = 𝜋𝑟 2 ℎ

𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 = 𝜋 × 92 × 4
𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 = 324𝜋𝑓𝑡 3
• Assuming that water costs $0.22 per gallon and that pools cost $185 per foot of radius calculate the
total cost of materials for the pool. Keep in mind that there are 7.48 gallons of water per square foot.

Solution

pools cost $185 per foot of radius

so cost of pool is = 185 × 9 = $1665

there are 7.48 gallons of water per square foot

𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑝𝑜𝑜𝑙 = 𝜋𝑟 2
𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑝𝑜𝑜𝑙 = 81𝜋

𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑝𝑜𝑜𝑙 = 254.47𝑓𝑡 2

𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑖𝑛 𝑝𝑜𝑜𝑙 = 7.48 × 254.47
𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑖𝑛 𝑝𝑜𝑜𝑙 = 1903.43 𝑔𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑛
Now water cost of $0.22 per gallon

𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 = $0.22 × 1903.43

𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 = $418.76
𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑝𝑜𝑜𝑙 = $1665 + $418.76
𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑝𝑜𝑜𝑙 = $2083.76

• Assuming that a pool will take 2.5 hrs. per foot of radius, compute the total labor hours for the
pool.

Solution

𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑙𝑎𝑏𝑜𝑢𝑟 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑝𝑜𝑜𝑙 = 2.5 × 9

𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑙𝑎𝑏𝑜𝑢𝑟 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑝𝑜𝑜𝑙 = 22.5 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟
• If you are to pay someone $19/hr, compute the total cost of labor.

𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑙𝑎𝑏𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑡 = $19 × 22.5

𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑙𝑎𝑏𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑡 = $427.5
. Find a total cost for the project.

𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑡 = $427.5 + $2083.76

𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑡 = $2511.26
• A final paragraph that describes your steps and findings.
To provide an estimate for installing a pool, I first computed the pool's radius, diameter, and volume
based on the given equation
𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 = 81
, resulting in a radius of 9 feet, a diameter of 18 feet, and a volume of 324π cubic feet with a height
of 4 feet. The total cost of materials, including the pool and water, was estimated at $2083.76.
Additionally, labor costs were calculated at $427.5, considering 2.5 hours per foot of radius at a rate
of $19 per hour, resulting in a total project cost of $2511.26. This estimate aims to assist in securing
the job for the landscaping business.
