RESEARCH PLAN

Project title: : Automatic Air Pump Powered By Dc Motor

Project Category: : Robotics
Researcher: : Jade Lopez Evangelista
Project Adviser: : Sir. Rey mercado
Name of School: : Dangay National High School
School Address: : Dangay, Roxas, Oriental Mindoro

Rationale:

Under-inflation is one of the leading causes of tire failure. If tire pressure is too low,
too much of the tire’s surface area touches the road, which increases friction. Increased friction
can cause the tires to overheat, which can lead to premature wear, tread separation and blowouts
(Baileygreer, 2017).
Depending on the severity of the damage, your tire may deflate rapidly or slowly over
time; either way, you will not be able to ride on a deflated tire without causing serious damage to
your rim and or tire, potentially costing you a fortune to repair or replace in the future
(Bicycleuniverse n.d).
A direct current (DC) motor is type of electric machine that converts electrical energy
into mechanical energy. DC motors take electric power through direct current, and convert this
energy into mechanical energy. It uses magnetic fields that occur from the electrical currents
generated, which powers the movement of a rotor fixed within the output short. The output
torque and speed depends upon both the electrical input and the design of the motor (UK.Rs
2022, Magnetic Innovations 2022).
A pump is just a manually actuated piston. On a pump’s down stroke, a check valve
(allows air-flow in one direction) seals the piston chamber, resulting in air being pressurised as
the pump is compressed. That pressure increases until it exceeds that inside the tire. At this point,
a second one-way valve will allow air to flow from the pressurised pump chamber into the tier.
You extend the pump again, the check valve opens to refill the chamber with air and you repeat
the process (Bikeradar, 2022).
Bicycle pumps use several different valve types, primarily Schrader and Presta. These
two types of valves correspond to the matching valve on the bike tube. Bike tubes can be
purchased in either Schrader or presta varieties. When you put the valve onto the tire valve and
lock it in place, it allows the air exiting the pump to be pushed directly into the tube, rather than
spraying out into the open atmosphere. Quality floor pumps have a pressure gauge attached,
which allows you to read the tire pressure currently in your tube and pump to the desired
pressure level (Fletcher, 2009).
The purpose of this study is to avoid accidents cause by the deflation of the tire and
causing serious damage to the rim of the tire

B. Research Questions, Hypotheses and Expected Outcomes

Generally, the current study will analyze the air pump ability of dc motor.

Specifically, the study will seek answers to the following questions.

1.Are the dc motor capable of being an automatic air pump?

2.How excellent is the performance quality of the Automatic air pump with dc motor in terms of:

a. Time
b. Effectiveness
c. Durability

Hypotheses
The current study will be guided by the following hypothesis:

1. The dc motor is not strong enough to push air.

2. The performance quality of the Automatic air pump with dc motor is not good.
3. There is no significant difference between the experimental Automatic air pump and the
commercially available product in terms of:

a. Time
b. Effectiveness
c. Durability

C. Research methods

A. Materials
Dc motor
Hose
Nozzle
Power chord
Screw
Glue gun
Plywood
Metal rod
Disk
Tube
Metal rod

B. Procedure
Collection and Preparations of Materials
The researcher will gathered the air pump material such as hose and nozzle
DC motor, screw, plywood, switch , battery and timer from Researcher house
hold .The material will be sanitized. Once clean and dry, material will proceed to
be construct the structure of the Bicycle Pump.

D. Testing
Duration Performance Test
The difference in the rate of pumping air with Automatic air pump with Dc motor will be
compared with a regular bike pump.
The construction of the bicycle pump will be made in a safe place and the nozzle will be inserted
in the tire, the length of time the tire inflated will be observed. Inflating of tire will noted as
inflating power(1-2), time (3-4). The time and pressure will be categorized as low to high.

Risk and Safety

In using the Automatic bicycle pump will require a great supervision from adult to
prevent serious cuts and unnecessary harm.

a. Data Analysis

Mean/averages will be used in comparing the results of Automatic air pump in every test.
Meanwhile One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) will be used to determine the significance
differences of Automatic air pump to the commercially available product.
