Assessment of the nutritional status of the patient

Task 1
A 26-year-old man with a preliminary diagnosis appeared in the emergency
department of the hospital: " Stomach ulcer ". Somatometric parameters
measured in the emergency room: height – 172 cm; body weight – 98 kg;
shoulder circumference – 38 cm; skin-fat fold of the triceps – 17 mm (1.7 cm).

Control questions for the task:

1. Calculate additional somatometric indicators (body mass index and shoulder
muscle circumference).

Additional Somatometric Indicators:

• Body Mass Index (BMI):
• BMI = Weight (kg) / (Height (m))^2
• BMI = 98 kg / (1.72 m)^2 ≈ 33.06
• Shoulder Muscle Circumference:
• Shoulder Muscle Circumference = Shoulder Circumference - (2 * Triceps
Skin-Fold)
• Shoulder Muscle Circumference = 38 cm - (2 * 17 mm) = 38 cm - 3.4 cm ≈
34.6 cm

2. Тo assess the nutritional status of the patient.

Assessment of Nutritional Status:

• Body Mass Index (BMI) Interpretation:
• BMI Categories:
• Underweight: BMI < 18.5
• Normal Weight: 18.5 ≤ BMI < 24.9
• Overweight: 25 ≤ BMI < 29.9
• Obesity: BMI ≥ 30
• Result: The patient's BMI is approximately 33.06, indicating the presence
of obesity.
• Shoulder Muscle Circumference Interpretation:
• Shoulder Muscle Circumference can provide insights into muscle mass and
nutritional status.
• Comparing the value (34.6 cm) to reference ranges may help assess muscle
condition.
• Triceps Skin-Fold Measurement:
• Triceps Skin-Fold of 17 mm suggests the presence of subcutaneous fat.
• Overall Assessment:
• The combination of obesity (elevated BMI) and the presence of
subcutaneous fat may suggest excess body fat.
