Difficulties in Socializing : Cultural Difference faced by the selected IP’s Student

in BNHS and the impact of it on their academic performance.

Socialization is an essential aspect of human life, and it is crucial for

individuals to learn and understand the social norms and values of their respective
cultures. However, some students , especially those from indigenous people (IPs)
community, face difficulties in socializing due to cultural differences . Several studies
have focused on the impact of cultural differences on student socialization and
academic performance. In a study conducted by Kim and Schneider (2005), they
found that cultural differences could lead to social isolation, which can negatively
affect academic performance. Similarly, a study by Yosso (2005) revealed that the
cultural mismatch between students and their teachers can create a hostile learning
environment, which can hinder academic success.

This research is relevant to both local and global contexts as cultural

differences are prevalent in various societies worldwide. In many countries there is a
significant indigenous population that faces socialization difficulties within
mainstream educational systems. In global Context indigenous population exist
across the globe, and the challenges faced by IP students in socializing are not limited
to a specific region. Recognizing the impact of these difficulties on their academic
performance is essential in the global discourse on inclusive education. Understanding
the universal nature of these challenge can help policymakers, educators, and
researchers worldwide develop strategies to promote cultural diversity, enhance
social inclusion , and improve the academic outcomes of IP students in diverse
educational contexts.

The Philippines is a multicultural country, with over 100 ethno -linguistics

groups, each with its distinct culture and tradition. However , the indigenous peoples,
who comprise around 15% of the population ,are often marginalized and
discriminated against , leading to difficulties in accessing education. Moreover, the
education system in the Philippines is largely westernized, which can create cultural
mismatch for IP student. One of the primary difficulties faced by students from
culturally diverse backgrounds is communication and melange barriers. Students who
are non-native speakers of the dominant language may struggle to express themselves
effectively, participate in class discussions, and form meaningful relationships with
their peers. Limited language proficiency can lead to feelings of isolation, hinder
collaborative learning, and impede academic progress. Students who have recently
migrated or relocated to a new cultural setting may struggle with cultural adjustment
and homesickness. Adapting to a different cultural environment, language, and social
dynamics can be overwhelming and may result in feelings of isolation, loneliness, and
anxiety. The emotional impact of cultural adjustment difficulties can have a
detrimental effect on students mental well-being and hinder their ability ton engage in
social interactions and academic pursuits. Students who face challenges in socializing
may have limited opportunities for peer interactions, collaboration, and the exchange
ideas. These limited social connections can hinder their ability to form study groups,
seek academic assistance, and engage in collaborative projects, thereby affecting their
learning outcomes.

While several studies have focused on the impact of cultural differences on

student academic performance, there is research gap in understanding how cultural
difference affect the socialization of IP students in high school and how it, in turn,
impacts their academic success. This research aims to bridge this gap and provide a
better understanding of the challenges faced by IP students in socializing in high
school.

The study important because IPs often face challenges in adapting to the
cultural norms of the mainstream society, which can impact their socialization and
academic performance. By understanding the experiences of IP students in a specific
educational setting, the study can provide insights into the challenges that other IP
students may face in similar contexts. Thus study aims to investigate the difficulties in
socializing faces by selected IP (Indigenous Peoples) students in BNHS (Bambad
National High School) and the impact of these difficulties on their academic
performance, specifically in the context of cultural differences.
The role of social media in today's social movement

In today”s digital world, one have get connected with internet to get a bunch
of information in their hand. With the developments of new communication
technologies, people have experienced a big transformation in communicating and
sharing the information in their daily and social life. This sharing of information over
social media platforms such as Facebook, Tweeter, Instagram, etc leaves a big impact
on people’s mind (EduBirdie 2022).Social media has changed the way we
communicate and connect with one another, bridging the gap between people from
different backgrounds and cultures (Mark Zuckerberg).Social media can be a force for
good, stating that “ Social media is a powerful tool to bring together people who share
a common purpose and vision for a better world.’’Her harnessed positively to
promote social good, unity, and advocacy (Arianna Huffington).social media
encourages us to think about communication as a way to remove oneself from the
physical world.’’In other words, social media can create a false sense of connection
that can be detrimental to genuine human relationship.social media plays and
negatively. It has changed the way we communicate and behave and has the potential
for significant social impact. However, it’s important to use social media responsibly
and mindfully to ensure that it doesn’t overshadow important aspects of our lives
(Sherry Turkle).the existing literature suggest that social media has become an
increasingly important component of modern-day social movements, allowing for
information-sharing, the proliferation of ideas, and the mobilization of collective
action on a global scale (Hanry Farrell).

This research is relevance to both local and global context. Social media has
become an integral tool for social movements in today’s wold. It allows for ideas and
messages to be spread quickly, easily and on a global scale. In the local context, social
media has allowed for mobilization of community member and for protests to be
organized with ease.It has also provided a platform for individuals to share their
personal experiences and raise awareness for social issues. In the global context, social
media has brought attention to social issues that may not have been widely discussed
otherwise. It has allowed for people around the world to connect and share ideas,
helping to create a global community of activists. However, at times, social media has
also been criticized for amplifying certain voices while silencing other.has played an
increasingly important role in social movements around the world. It has facilitated
the sharing of information, organizing of protests, and has been a tool for activists to
connect with each other and with supporters around the globe. In the
Philippines, social media platforms are used for various purposes, including keeping up
with current events, sharing news and information, connecting with, friends and
family, and networking. Social media networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter
are used by Filipinos to stay up-to-date on current events. In light of these
concerns, researchers are studying the role of social media in social movements, both
domestically and globally. Their research attempts to determine the reasons why
social media played an important role in these movements, how it has impacted the
movements and the potential risks and limitation of social media.
The Philippines in September 2020, approximately 75% of Filipinos aged 18
and above are using social media platforms such as Facebook ,Twitter, and
Instagram . Social media has become a powerful tool in social movements as it
provides an accessible platform for Filipinos to voice out their opinions and
participate in various advocacies. Social media played a significant role in the
previous elections in the Philippines , wherein netizens utilized platforms to scrutinize
and provide insights on candidates ,their platforms , and the promises. This led to a
more informed electorate and better decision-making during the voting process.
Social media has become an indispensable tool in today's social movement in the
Philippines . It serves as a platform for Filipinos to express their opinions , demand
justice and accountability , and promote advocacies that seek to bring positive change
to society.

The role of social media in social movement research is currently an area with
a research gap. Despite the increasing prominence of social media in contemporary
social movements, the extent to which the play a role in mobilizing contextual
narratives surrounding the movement remains unknown . Researchers are examining
social media’s influence on political discourse, including its impact on influencing
political processes and contributing to social change. A growing body of literature
suggests that social media can serve as a platform for collective action and facilitate
the development of network among movement participants. However, the impact of
social media in shaping these contexts is still unclear. Further research into the role of
social media in the social movements is necessary to better understand the
mechanisms through which social media affects the political ,social, and economic
outcomes of social movements.

The role of social media in today’s social movement holds a significant proof
of urgency. With the advent of social media platforms, people from all walks of life
have come together to raise their voice against social injustices ,inequality, and
discrimination. Using social media as a platform for organizing and rallying, social
movements have been able to spread their message globally, mobilize people in large
numbers, and rise awareness about the issues they are fighting for. Social media
platforms also make it easier for social movements to organize protests, rallies, and
other events. Platforms like Facebook and Twitter allow for easy event creation and
promotion, making it easier for people to mobilize their networks and draw attention
to their cause. Additionaly, live-streaming has become a key tool for documenting
protest and rallies, allowing people to participate in these events remotely.
The role of social media in today's social movement research is vital. Social
media platforms provide a platform for social activists to voice their opinions and
reach a large audience . Social media can help to spread information about social
movements, increasing awareness of social issues, mobilizing people to engage in
activism , and shaping public opinion. Through social media, researchers can collect
data on social movement activity , including the types of messages being shared, the
demographics of people participating in movements , and the geographic locations of
movements. Social media can be used to analyze the effectiveness of social
movements , identify the strengths and weaknesses of social movements, and assess
the impact of social movements on society.

Social media provide a unique platform for activists to share their messages,
and to build support for their causes. This is particularly true of younger
generations, who are more likely to engage with social media content than older
generations. Social media can also exacerbate divisions within social movements,
particularly when people with different opinions clash online. The social media plays
an important role in social movements today. It provides a powerful tool for activists
to connect with like- minded individuals , and to gain visibility for their causes. As
such, it is essential that we continue to study the role of social media in social
movements ,in order to better understand its impact, and to develop strategies to
maximize its effectiveness.
