Concept Paper
Learning Area: Building and Enhancing New Literacy Skills Across the Curriculum
Focus Problem: How to integrate Media literacy in the Secondary High School Curriculum?

I. INTRODUCTION

A much neglected aspect in education nowadays is the importance of integrating Media

Literacy across the curriculum. Media per se, is a very powerful for both in the education and
development of children. However, it also comes with its negative effects. Media literacy is most
successful when it is integrated across the curriculum and, thus, related to national, state or
district educational standards and assessment rubrics. Given training and practice through
professional development, teachers can easily integrate curricula, devising lessons that
incorporate media literacy framework while meeting state education standards. Media literacy
can serve both as a medium of instruction. The education department needs to have a
framework for media literacy which serves as an excellent integration tool through which to
provide a common critical thinking approach and vocabulary for teacher and students alike. This
frame applies to any and all content or subject areas or themes, and as students apply a
process of inquiry, they can work across disciplines to solve problems. Lesson plans should
include the use of media in the instruction of language arts, health, and technology and set
instruction standards for each given the content, these standards could easily be extended to
visual and performing arts, math, or social studies. In Media Literary, the core should have four
strands named for the language arts: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening in terms of
instructional training. This may also include viewing and representing as two additional strands,
and although all of the strands can be connected to media literacy, Viewing and Representing
tends to imply the multi-media nature of media literacy and the deconstruction and construction
skills called for in today's global media environment. National Technology, Health, and School
Library Standards lend themselves very easily to media literacy implementations, as well. It is
therefore essential that teachers should incorporate media literacy lessons and even include
instructions using various forms of media. Students today are very exposed to media that it
would be easy for them to ride with the instructional flow. Filipino children, one way or the other
have been exposed to media. However, only a few teachers use media related instruction in
elementary and high school.

According to Freud, this takes place in a series of stages in which conflict between the
demands of the superego and those of the id is always threatening to disrupt the functioning of
the ego. Behaviorism asserts that all behavior is learned. It originated in the work of Ivan
Pavlov, who showed that behavior that was thought to be instinctual could in fact be shaped or
conditioned by learning situations. This line of research was continued by John B. Watson,
whose experiments revealed the ability of conditioning to shape behavior in almost any
direction.
Studies of feral children, who have experienced extreme isolation or have been reared
outside human society, show that such children are able to learn but that they do so far more
slowly than children who have not been isolated in early childhood. Other studies have found
that normal development requires not only the presence of other humans but also the attention
and love of adults. Children raised in orphanages and other nonfamily settings are more likely to
develop emotional problems and to be retarded in their language development than comparable
children reared by their parents. In my opinion, nurture decides a social being. So it is important
that support children to have good environment and give a love to them.
Social interaction and social support from others, especially from your family and friends
is the greatest factor in building your own character. They help you grow. They learn to share,
and to communicate through language and actions. Socialization continues through school,
employment, friends, extended family, strangers and countless other methods. The roles a
person plays over a lifetime are influenced by social change and by changes in the culture of his
or her society. Socialization after childhood often occurs as a result of occupational mobility and
the influence of significant others. A person’s core identity shapes that individual’s responses to
new situations and challenges. Socialization may occur at any time during adulthood.
Sometimes people undergo socialization to correct patterns of social learning that they and
others find detrimental. Erik Erikson focused on identification, the social process whereby the
individual chooses adults as role models and attempts to imitate their behavior.
Nowadays, the emergence of technology has squeezed people, businesses and society
as a whole. The roles of technology has been showed on communication, education and even
in business. Here in the Philippines, we so much embrace technologies. We believe that these
technologies represents as a sign of developing and a higher in technology country and
technological advances in the Philippines. As you wander around, there is no Filipino that does
not have technologies or machines which help them and make their work becomes easier.
According to the Phil star Global, the Philippines has improved in terms of its preparedness for
technological change in the next few years. The Philippines climbed to the 55th spot out of 82
economies tracked in the latest Technological Readiness Ranking published by the Economist
Intelligence Unit. In Southeast Asia, the Philippines is the 4 th most tech-ready economy. It only
states here that the Philippines has a rapid increase in terms of technology. Although
technology give us an easier life and benefit us, still there are lots of disadvantages of it
specifically on the use of social media.
According to Cohen, H. (2011), defined social media as the platforms that enable the
interactive web by engaging users to participate in, comment on and create content as means of
communicating with their social graph, other users and the public. Social media is used as a
means of communication with others. The very interesting with it is that social media is portable,
meaning you can access interact anywhere and anytime if you want to.
It is easy to contact someone in other places or countries and interconnect with them.
Meeting friends online is easy, but trusting people virtually is relatively tough. The paper seeks
to determine the excessive use of social media and its correlation of their social relationship to
the users especially to the millennial who are likely prone in this area of study.
II. BODY
Foreign Literature
According to a July 2012 study by the McKinsey Global Institute, there are 1.5 billion
people using networking throughout the world, with 80% of them interacting regularly with other
on social media users. However, while social media is a powerful tool for interacting with others,
many people and organizations have jumped into using it without considering the risks. The
threats that you might encounter were identity theft, cyberbullying, invasion of privacy, political
standings and more. As of today’s current situation, instead of using social media as a tool of
communicating and interacting with others, individuals use it as a criminal intent that could
possibly harm and ruin your life. Meanwhile, here in the Philippines, the use of social media is
vigorous and essential.
As stated by Walker (2018), social networking addiction is a phrase sometimes used to
refer to someone spending too much time using Facebook, Twitter and other forms of social
media, so much so that it interferes with other aspects of daily life. There's no official medical
recognition of social networking addiction as a disease or disorder. Still, the cluster of behaviors
associated with heavy or excessive use of social media has become the subject of much
discussion and research. Addiction usually refers to compulsive behavior that leads to negative
effects. In most addictions, people feel compelled to do certain activities so often that they
become a harmful habit, which then interferes with other important activities such as work or
school.
In that perspective, a social networking addict could be considered someone with a
compulsion to use social media to excess, constantly checking Facebook status updates or
"stalking" people's profiles on Facebook, for example, for hours on end. But it's hard to tell when
fondness for an activity becomes a dependency and crosses the line into a damaging habit or
addiction. Researchers at Chicago University concluded that social media addiction can be
stronger than addiction to cigarettes and booze following an experiment in which they recorded
the cravings of several hundred people for several weeks. Media cravings ranked ahead of
cravings for cigarettes and alcohol. And at Harvard University, researchers actually hooked
people up to functional MRI machines to scan their brains and see what happens when they talk
about themselves, which is a key part of what people do in social media. Plenty of clinicians
have observed symptoms of anxiety, depression and some psychological disorders in people
who spend too much time online, but little hard evidence has been found proving that social
media or Internet use caused the symptoms. There's a similar lack of data about social
networking addiction.
Sociologists and psychologists, meantime, have been exploring the impact of social
networking on real-world relationships, especially marriage, and some have questioned whether
excessive use of social media could play a role in divorce. The Wall Street Journal debunked
reports that 1 in 5 marriages are ruined by Facebook, noting that there appeared to be no
scientific evidence supporting such data. Especially today, many adults were exposed on social
media to post their statuses or rather problems in many platforms. Sherry Turkle, a researcher
at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has written extensively about the impact of social
media on relationships, theorizing that they actually weaken human ties. In her book, Alone
Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other, she chronicles
some of the negative impacts of constantly being connected by technology, which paradoxically
can leave people feeling more alone.
Still, other researchers have concluded that social networking can make people feel
better about themselves and more connected to society. Some people consider excessive use of
social networks simply the latest form of "Internet Addiction Disorder," a phenomenon people
first began writing about in the 1990s when Internet use was starting to spread. Even back then,
people theorized that heavy use of the Internet might impair people's performance at work, in
school, and in family relationships. Nearly 20 years later, there is still no agreement that
excessive use of the Internet or social networking services is pathological or should be
considered a medical disorder.
As cited by Walker (2018), research suggesting that sharing information about ourselves
fires up the pleasure centers of our brains may shed light on the roots of social media addiction.
The research was conducted at Harvard University in 2011 and published in the Proceedings of
the National Academy of Sciences. The study, led by Diana Tamir, explains a series of five
experiments the team conducted to test their hypothesis, which was that people derive intrinsic
value from communicating information about themselves to other people.
Yes indeed that it is not a mistake to socialize but if it is too much and do not care about
what will be the consequences of your action, therefore it is extremely a mistake. "Self-
disclosure was strongly associated with increased activation in brain regions that form the
mesolimbic dopamine system, including the nucleus acumens and ventral tegmental area," the
Harvard-based study states. "Moreover, individuals were willing to forgo money to disclose
about the self." Essentially, they found that people prefer to share information about themselves
so much that they were willing to forego money to do so. When people listening to or judging
other people, their brains didn't light up the same way. Curiously, the researchers also found the
activation of pleasure centers was even greater when people were told they had an audience.
As mentioned by Walker (2018), kids' Facebook use appears to be waning, or at least
their enthusiasm for it is, at the same time that teenagers' use of other social networks and
media appears to be growing. Overall, teens are sharing a lot more about themselves on social
networks than they were a few years ago. An interesting findings in a May 2013 report from the
Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life project. Titled, "Teens, Social Media, and
Privacy," the report found that teenagers expressed "waning enthusiasm for Facebook" and
"widespread negative feelings" about their experiences on the massive social network, even
though a majority of those surveyed still use it. Those negative attitudes apparently don't keep
teens from Facebooking, though. Pew reported that 77 percent of American teens who use the
Internet still use Facebook, which they regard as a social necessity even though they're
annoyed by how many adults have joined it, as well as by the "inanity" and "drama" of what
people post.
Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat and other newer social networks seemed to draw more
upbeat comments and generate excitement in the teens who were interviewed, according to the
report. Of all the teens who say they are on social networks, 94 percent say they have a profile
on Facebook, 26 percent have a Twitter profile, and 11 percent have an Instagram profile .The
found that while some teens said they enjoyed using Facebook, "far more associated it with
constraints through an increasing adult presence, high-pressure or otherwise negative social
interactions or feeling overwhelmed by others who share too much. "The report went in some
depth to explore the psychology and sociology of kids' Facebook practices, explaining how they
use likes, posts, and tagging to bolster their "social position" or popularity. Feeling pressure to
master the kind of posting and tagging behaviors that will attract a lot of "likes" and make them
look more popular may be one reason why teenagers expressed unease over using Facebook.
Local Literature
The internet is increasingly becoming useful to many people around the world. There are
millions of people accessing it every day and there seems to be that we are just beginning to
see a world that will fully be preoccupied with it now and in the future. However, there is a
concern at the rate at which this is happening and the long hours spent online.
According to the professionals, internet addiction is just like other addictions in the sense
that severe symptoms show up with continued use. Most of people who used different social
media platforms and get addicted to it suffer anxiety and depression. The obsession of internet
have negative effects on our social life. When uses are unable to manage and exercise control
over their internet usage, relationships of family get compromised. The user may get depressed
due to their preoccupation with things that do not add any value in their lives.
The usage of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube is very popular in the
Philippines that even a two year old child knows how to operate and use it. Facebook is a
popular free social networking website and known as the top grossing sites all over the world. It
allows registered users to create profiles, upload photos and videos, send messages, and their
newest update is using Facebook live that is now in trend usually to the millennial. They post
statuses that even sometimes below the belt and not necessary to be posted on this platform.
As a result of this popularity, social scientists have recently begun to examine aspects of its use
(for a detailed review of this topic see Wilson, Gosling & Graham, 2012). However, limited
research has examined the potential for Facebook use to become addictive (Griffiths, Kuss and
Demetrovics, 2014). According to the statistics, in 2018 the amount of Facebook users in the
Philippines was expected to reach 36.2 million, up from 29.88 million in 2016.
With more than 2 billion monthly active users, Facebook is the most popular social
network worldwide. Popular activities on the social network include watching videos, liking
content via button, reading articles and messaging friends on 1-1 basis. In July 2016, Facebook
Messenger surpassed one billion monthly active users.

III. CONCLUSION
A great influence had been done by social media. It made our lives easier and more
accessible. Through social media, we communicate, through social media we learn, be aware of
our surroundings and educate us, more so, social media help us to keep in touch of our love
ones in other places. We can easily reach people from anywhere. And now that we are
connected wherever we go, we can simply open our gadgets and start communicating in
different platforms. It connect us. Social media can be used in different fields. It can be in
education, communication, transportation and even in business.
One of the biggest pros of social media is that it nurtures and expands relationships.
Improving communication and strengthening human connection is the reason social media
emerged. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Snapchat, chat groups and countless other
social networking sites help people build on existing relationships, make new friends, and
reinvigorate relationships that have lapsed over time. Regardless of where a person lives, it’s
possible to find others who share the same interests and concerns.
Social media boost our productivity and mold our personality. At this time, you can
already shop virtually. Through online shopping, we can order things needed without leaving our
house. And most importantly, we can order anytime and anywhere and just wait them to knock
on your door and deliver what you had ordered. Social media is fun also at sometimes. Many
webpages or platforms that will provide enjoyment when you are bored.
Unfortunately, many of us were not well educated on how social media be used properly.
As state above, many evidences prove that different social media platforms have so much
disadvantages. Students are hooked up in habitual use of internet. They are fond in playing
online games, posting status, creating memes, stalking and even bashing someone online. With
this reason, several people are victims of the excessive usage of social media. Some are
targets of hackers that drudge their personal information and pretending someone else or what
we call identity theft.
Some are victims of cyberbullying, especially today. Many were reported Students were
committing suicide. They cannot handle their problem and their surroundings. They experienced
to be bashed by someone that hurt their feelings and affect most their mental and emotional
aspects. Others were posting statuses about what was currently happening to them, posting
their personal problems or even insult others.
The true purpose of social media were not properly used by the students. As a matter of
fact, if there are some social issues posted in internet, netizens tend to react and try to make it
trend as if it is very interesting. Truly, we embrace the so much in social media. Instead of doing
your work, it diverts you into something in social media that is not really sensible and important.
I am not against with the use of social media. Yes, it help us a lot in many perspective. What is
not right is the extreme usage of millennial on it. They abuse what was really appropriate and go
beyond their limit.
We should learn about this problem. We must put in our minds that whatever action we
do, we should face the consequences because we always have our choice. We should not
blame it to anyone but to ourselves only.

As of today’s generation, we must learn to be observant and responsible enough in our

action. We should think what would be the possible consequences before doing an action. Let
us remind ourselves all the time that freedom has its limitation.
