CNBC.com has ranked Austin the best
city for young people in the USA. What
makes the capital city of Texas a cool place?
If you are in Austin and you don’t know a
party to go to, just stop for a moment and
listen. Pretty soon, you’ll hear some music
playing. Just follow it and join in the fun.
Austin officially became the “Live Music
Capital of the World”® in 1991. There are
nearly 200 live music venues there, and it is
home to more than 1,900 musicians. This
means that you can catch a show any day
of the week, at almost any time and some-
times at unusual places like the City Hall,
food markets or the airport. Of course it
hasn’t always been like this in Austin. There
wasn’t a single live music venue in Austin
before 1933.

Units 1 & 2 Test 1
People in Austin don’t only play hard, they also work hard.
There are many jobs for people in the film, tourist, music and
high-tech industries as well as in education. There are excellent
schools in Austin and a famous university, the University of Texas.
In 2009, MSN voted Austin the “Greenest City in America”.
There are miles of hiking and bike trails, more than 200 parks,
three lakes, more than 50 public swimming pools in the city,
as well as a large river, the Colorado. Austin is also often called
“the clean air city”, and we can imagine that there will be fresh-
er air here in the future than in many other American cities, as a
lot of people cycle or take a pedicab (a bicycle taxi). Also, people
don’t smoke at all in Austin’s public places.
According to Travel & Leisure magazine, Austin ranks No. 1
in another way. It has the “best people”. Best in what way? As
Sandra Bullock, part-time Austin resident puts it, “There is an
open-mindedness that does not exist other places. That’s why
I’m here.”
And finally, a quick note: there are more bloggers in Austin
than anywhere else in the USA J!
