ARTS AND CRAFTS MOVEMENT
The arts and crafts movement went on from 1880 to 1920.
It was a movement critiquing industrial labor it was against how machines were replacing
workers and it called for an end to the division of labor and promote the craftsmen and their
handmade products. Essentially it was a countermovement to the industrial revolution.
It started in the fine arts and decorative arts world hence the use of flora fauna and folk
styles can be seen.
This movement was more about the method of production rather than a specific visual
language

The core characteristics of the Arts and Crafts movement are:

Raw, truthful materials with a focus on their natural qualities

Simple forms that hero and celebrate the construction of the object
Designs, motifs, and patterns inspired by nature
Vernacular designs focused on traditional disciplines and techniques
ROUGH SKETCHES
We went through multiple objects as options to redesign, from a drone to a dustbin.

Because the movement was a countermovement to the industrial revolution, we wanted to

take a product that is a mass-produced item from the current time and redesign it in terms of
that time period's design and material choices.

We decided to go along with the helmets because they are a mass-produced object used in
our day-to-day life that hasn't had much change design-wise in a long time and is also a
product with a simple form.

THE HELMET
So, in the 1880s the helmets weren't made of the materials today i.e. polycarbonate or
fiberglass, at that time they were made out of shola pith covered with cloth, lightweight but
didn't provide much protection.

In 1914 the first motorcycle helmet was compulsorily worn in the TT aisle of the man races
for the first time. It was invented by Dr. Eric gardener who noticed someone was coming to
him for a motorcycle-inflicted head injury every two weeks A after that slowly the riding
helmet became a necessity to a compulsion.
FORM IDEATION

The form of the helmet is

based on a bird as the
movement has a lot of
flora and fauna influences.

the bird's beak-like form is

used at the front to give
the helmet a sharp but
natural look,
A bird's wings are
attached to the sides
made out of
polycarbonate.
these wings have intricate
textures and engravings
THE PROBLEMS
SMELL - the helmets can get smelly dues to sweat after awhile
SIZE - Helmets are usually made a standard size and for some, it is loose for
some a little tight
NOISE - using the helmet with the front screen off creates a lot of noise and
as fast the motorcycle or scooter goes the noise keeps getting higher."On
average the noise level in a motorcycle helmet can be between 95dB and
105dB when traveling at 100 km per hour. That's some serious noise and it
can get to you on a long trip. So, how big a deal is wind noise to
motorcyclists."
SUFFOCATED FEELING - increased heat and lesser air due to full coverage.
THE SOLUTIONS
There are many different types of helmets serving different purposes
Studies have shown that full-face helmets offer the most protection to motorcycle riders
because 35% of all crashes showed a major impact on the chin-bar area. and since the full-
face helmet has coverage there it provides the best protection.

This is why we chose to use the main form of full-face helmets but also added a few
features of the off-road/ motocross helmet we decided to elongate the chin and visor portions
to allow a better flow of air to fix the increased heat and suffocation problem during riding.

The smell problem can be dealt with easily by using removable padding which can be
washed, Expanded polystyrene is usually used in these helmets for the inner crush part.
The issue with noise is there because
air is entering from below the helmet,
so the lesser air entering will mean
lesser noise. for this, a scarf like a
neckpiece will be attached to the
bottom part of the helmet - made out
of stretch cotton so that not only is it
stretchy to accommodate different
neck sizes but its also sweat
absorbent and comfortable.

Stretch cotton is a traditional woven

fabric with warp and weft threads
made predominately from cotton with
around 2-3% of elastic fibres twisted
into the yarn giving between 10-20%
lateral stretch
PATTERNS OF THE
HELMET

1. Patterns were inspired by that

of William Morris's designs,
who played a key role in
creating a visual language for
the arts and crafts movement,
2. There was a certain use of
more prominent motifs which
stand out to the eye, and less
dominant and less opaque
patterns in background which
gives a sense of more detailed
patterns.

JATAKA
THOUGHT PROCESS
The story of Jataka 485 told through one
frame.
Instead of being direct ive used many
symbols in the painting because pahadi
paintings which was the style of painting I
referenced had a lot of symbolism.
Ive chosen to show the moment right before
everything goes wrong in the Jataka.

The woman's face is turned away because

she is oblivious to what is about to happen
and after her husband is shot she is so
entranced in her rejoicing and in the music
she doesn't notice.

The lightning in the sky is also hinting at

something bad that is about to happen
