CREATE A CREATURE

CREATE A CREATURE

After students have created

their “creature” let them use
their imaginations to dream
up a story about their
drawing!

This lesson is an adaptation from the

popular Exquisite Corpse lesson made
popular by Surrealist artists like Salvador
Dali. I for one don’t like that name so I’ve
always done my own version called, “Create
a Creature” I’ve made an easy handout and
directions so you can use this lesson as an
“I’m done” activity, with a sub or with your
entire class!

CREATE A CREATURE: STEPS
Group your class in small sections of three students (student #1, student #2 &
student #3). It takes 3 students to create one creature. Print out and copy the
blank “Create a Creature” handout. I have enclosed a finished creature for you
to use as an example (this should save you time so you don’t have to make
your own example). This game is also called the exquisite corpse. But for kids I
think “Create a Creature” sounds so much better!
Step # 1: Have student #1 draw a head & neck in
the top row labeled “head & neck”. The head and
neck of the “creature” should be whatever they want.
The more creative and crazy the funnier it will be at
the end.The lines from the neck should extend just a
tiny bit past the first dotted gray line.

Step #2: When student #1 is finished drawing the

creature’s head & neck then they should fold the top
1/3 of the paper backwards so that the head can’t be
seen from the front of the paper. Fold
back so
Step #3: Students # 1 passes the paper to student student
#2 can’t
#2. This second person does NOT look at the head. see the
Then student #2 draws a body and arms on the head
creature. Again, this can be anything they want. They
just need to connect the body to the little lines
extended from the neck so they will know it lines up.
Then they need to draw the lines where the body
ends just a tiny bit over into the bottom 1/3 of the
page over the second gray line. This will help student
#3 know where to draw the legs and feet.

Step #4: Student #2 now folds the middle section

back so you can’t see the head, neck, body or arms.

Step #5: Student #2 passes their paper to student

#3.

Step #6: Student #3 now lines up the small part of

the body that was extended into the last 1/3 of the Unfold
page and draws legs and feet. This will finish off the to reveal
creature. the
creature!
Step #7: Student #3 returns their paper to student
#1 and all three students can see what “creature”
they created. There is usually a lot of laughter.
