Concerns

A. Gender and Human Sexuality

What is Adolescence?
- A period when a person undergoes a lot of changes.
- Transitional phase of growth and development between childhood and adulthood.
- The process or state of growing to maturity.

 Physical changes are observable.


 Some physiological changes are observable too.
 Menstruation for females
 Development of hoarse or bold voice for the males
 Brings about issues that teenagers may be curious about.
Reactions and attitudes in these issues may have great influence on their lives.
What is human sexuality?

- It is a measure of maleness and femaleness in one’s individuality and physical make up.
- It is how we behave.
- How we express ourselves.
- How we react.
- How we interact.
- Our own body

SEXUALITY – something biological and natural


- It means from fertilization to birth, and birth to growing up.

What is the difference between SEX and GENDER?

SEX – It is the biological characteristics of being a boy or a girl evidenced by the external and
internal reproductive parts.

Male – X Y Chromosomes
Female – X X Chromosomes

GENDER – It refers to the behavior and attitudes that are expected to be shown based on a
person’s sex.
- roles and activities that are exhibited by a person as a male or a female as deemed
appropriate or proper by society

Importance of sexuality as the component of one’s personality


 It helps a person to determine or define who he/she is.
 It allows one to easily list down his/her choices and plan what he/she wants to be in the
future.
 A big factor that influences a person in making his/her decisions in life.

IDENTITY CRISIS
- A feeling of not being sure about one’s self and what purpose one hasPAge

SEXUALITY IDENTITY
- refers to the sexual self-concept adolescents or teenagers
develop in themselves
- The state when teenagers establish to whom they are
romantically or sexually attracted to.
- dictates their sexual behavior or their sexual acts

SEXUAL ORIENTATION
- is a romantic or sexual attraction one has with other person
- A very critical stage in teenagers where they identify their sexual
identity and there is a need for the support and guidance of the
family, especially the parents.

SEXUAL ORIENTATION
Parents must be aware of the personal choices that their children will make so that they
may have an idea on the sexual orientation of their children. Whatever may be the sexual
identity of teenagers, the family must understand them. The family must also be aware of the
sexual activities of their teenager family members. They must know their set of friends and
peers do they may always remind them of being responsible with their sexuality.

C. Development of Decision-Making Skills in Managing Sexuality-


Related Issues
 Teenagers tend to do things and decide without thinking. They make decisions based on
their emotions and feelings.

 Not knowing what to do sometimes, they let other people to decide for them or just
imitate the same decisions as their friends without even thinking of what is really the
best or right thing to do for a certain problem.

THE FOLLOWING STEPS MAY SERVE AS YOUR GUIDE TO MAKE


RESPONSIBLE DECISIONS
1. Define your problem. You must define your problem personally.
2. Gather information. It may come from other people, family, friends of from a
reliable written material.
3. Define principles and values. You must be aware of your own personal values,
family values, and values of your society. These values may also affect a decision.
4. Evaluate potential choices or alternatives. Think of the advantages and
disadvantages of each choice. List down the short-term effects and long-term effects on
you and your loved ones.
5. Make a decision. Decide on what is the best choice to solve your problem.
6. Evaluate your decision. Identify if you made a good or poor decision. Remember
that you can always change your decision. If a poor decision was made, maturity and
responsibility may be shown by correcting and preventing to commit the same mistake.
