Understanding the Self

Module 2

Lesson 1

Activity 1

How do you define beauty

I define beauty as a combination of pleasing physical and inside qualities. It's not just
about what we see from the outside but also what's within. This means that the good physical
feature of a person is not enough for me to say that he or she is beautiful, it also takes
kindness, good heart and good spirit.

Do you see yourself as beautiful or handsome?

Yes, I do see my self as beautiful though the answer might be different if we're going to ask
other people. But then, I know that the true beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Each one of us
may look differently from each other but we are all created equally and beautifully according to
God's features. We are all God's creation and all his creation are beautiful. Aside from that, I
define beauty with accordance to attitude and not just the physical feature.

If you are given time, money and resources, what part of your body do you wish to
change?
I know that my physical features are not perfect, but I do still believe that we are already
beautiful from the moment that God created us in accordance to him. So, there's nothing I
want to change in my body. The body that I have is already enough for me since it is able to do
so many things I wanted to.

Application

1. How does the socially constructed concept of beauty affects an individual both in
negative and positive sense?
Socially constructed concept of beauty affects an individual negativity through influencing
them to change just to fit into the society's standard. Making them feel contented from what
they have, nor even feel ashamed of what they are. Then if they realized that they can't change
it, they become frustrated about it, lost their self confidence and even leads to serious
problems like depression, specially when they receive negative comments from other people.
Also, due to this concept of beauty, many are judged according to how they look that even
affects how they are treated in a specific society. However, the positive effect to an individual
with this socially constructed concept of beauty is the flourishing a person feels after fitting into
these standards. The feeling of satisfaction after realizing that to they actually belong in the
society they are living. Also when a person possesses the features that fits on the society's
standard of beauty, he or she gets the praises which impower his or her being.

and having them on hand feels so great and pleasing.

Application

1.How do you think did your family and relatives influence in your development of the self?

My family and relatives influence the development of myself through how I witness their
attitude towards possessions. Growing up, my family always reminded me that love, kindness,
being helpful and having a good spirit has a greater value than all materials we can buy for
ourselves. But also, they frequently define success as the state of being capable to have so
many things, like almost everything you always wanted for yourself. All of their views about
certain things becomes important to me, that it also becomes what I believe. Their opinions
becomes the basis for how I also see things on my own, and that how they help shape up my
material self.

2.What social pressure do you think has affected the development of your “self”?

The social pressure that affects the development of myself is regarding how people in the
society determine the level of success, social status, influence and power base on the number
and quality of possessions. Being one of those people who wanted to be called successful, has a
higher social status, influencial and powerful, I work hard in order to get those valuable
possessions. But then as I grow older there are also so many things I learn about life, that
changes how the society makes me think that possessions are really that important.

3.In what way did these social pressures become good or bad for you?

The society's perspective about the importance of possessions badly influences me through
wanting more and more for myself that it makes it hard for me to feel contented specially when
there are new things that must be added to my possessions in order to be called successful,
influencial, powerful or rich. It makes me materialistic that it becomes hard to find true
happiness since I am more focused on the thing that provides only temporary happiness. On
the other hand, their perspective about the importance of possession influences me in a good
way through making me work hard and stay motivated in anything I am doing specially because
I know in myself that I can get something afterwards.

Reflection 3

Dr. Jose Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonzo Realondo or commonly known as Dr. Jose Rizal, our
Philippine National Hero. Jose Rizal was born on June 19th, 1861 in Calamba, Philippines to a
middle class family in the Province of Laguana. His parents were Francisco Mercado and
Teodora Alonzo. Jose was also the seventh child of their eleven children. Throughout his life,
Rizal fought to free the Philippines from Spain. He was known as a poet, an educator, and a
journalist. He was also Asia’s first modern non-violent political leader. Jose even has his own
special holiday, "Rizal Day," which is celebrated on the anniversary of his death. Jose was very
smart; he mastered 23 languages, knew how to work 20 different jobs, and actually studied
medicine because his mother was going blind. He later became an eye surgeon.

Some qualities that would describe Jose Rizal are being open-minded, intelligent, and
hardworking. Jose really wanted to have freedom in the Philippines from Spain, so that the
Filipinos did not have to be controlled by another country. He did not care about himself. He
cared more about helping his country. He really wanted his country to be proud of him. Jose
also was very smart. He knew how to work many jobs and had mastered 23 languages. He also
helped other people who needed help. Jose was hardworking in all that he tried to accomplish.
He once said, "It’s a useless life that is not concentrated to a great ideal. It’s like a stone wasted
on the field without becoming a part of any edifice."

The qualities that Dr. Rizal has that I can relate to my own qualities is his being hardworking
and using his talent as a weapon in facing the challenges ahead. Just like how he wrote novels
that denounce the bad actions of the Spaniards towards the Filipino citizen. Same as him, I
want to use my talent in a way that would benefit my co Filipino citizen. I want to be hard
working as him and brave to to do the right thing no matter how hard would it be

Reflection 4

The film "Dekada 70" portrays the life of the middle class family in the Philippines
during the 1970 which is the start of the conjugal dictatorship of Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos.
This is were martial law is being implemented which gives excessive power to the government
that leads to no equality, no respect, no human dignity and no such thing as human rights. With
this situation, this period becomes the fecund period for the sociopolitical awakening and
involvement of many Filipino towards revolution.

The movie journeys with the central character Amanda Bartolomeo who is a wife and a
mother of five sons who grew up on this period and becomes active I'll n participating onto pro-
democracy movement which also started Amanda journey towards liberation.

The three most significant learning that I acquire in the movie is, no matter what happens
we have to fight for what we think is right, that mothers should not be belittled because they
are not just mothers but a mother of a nation who bares the hope of the future, and that
dictatorship is never a good type of government for our country as it majorly leads to
overpowering that harm the people of our nation.

The first significant learning I acquire which is, no matter what happens we have to fight for
what we think is right is made through how the film portrays the bravery of the characters
specially Jules the eldest son, to fight no matter what, even if it makes them risk their life.

Then the second one which is that, the mothers should no be belittled because they are
the mother of the nation which bares the hope of the future, I observe that during the first part
of the movie, women has little capability in sharing their ideas regarding serious matters just
like politics, but then Amanda prove that their opinions matters and that they are also
important.

The third one about dictatorship, it is pretty obvious that this type of governance in our
country doesn't work based on the significant event happened during the 1970. It leads to
many controversies about human rights which should always be given with consideration.

With all of this learnings my concern regarding politics was awaken specially regarding
properly knowing the people behind how are government works and to properly examine
politicians specially during elections in order to choose the right person for our government.
Also, by now I realize the importance of letting our voice be heard specially about corruption
and injustices that's happening on our country in order to be given with solution and actions.
