LESSON 2
Activity 2
1. Explain the difference of 2/4,3/4,and 4/4.
Time signatures is one of the key clues that can help understand the
rhythm and structure of a music piece. This consists of two numerals. The
upper numeral or number indicates how many beats will be present in a
bar. While the lower numeral/number indicates what kind of note is
considered one beat. The most common time signatures 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4
has a unique function and character. The 2/4 time signature tells that there
are two beats in a measure. Music that are written in 2/4 time is performed
more slowly than music written in ¾, and 4/4 time. It contains two equally
strong accents on beat one and two. The weak beats fall on the subdivision,
or eighth note, after beats one and two . Then, the ¾ time signature tells us
that there are three beats in a measure. Music written in ¾ time is
performed in a variety of different tempos. Example of dances performed in
¾ time is waltz and minuet. While the 4/4 time signature tells us that there
are four beats in a measure. This is used in variety of genres, most
frequently on rock, blues, country, funk and pop music. It is so popular that
it is often referred to as “common time”.
