PHYSICAL EDUCATION 2 (RHYTHMIC ACTIVITIES)

Every individual has rhythm. It is found in all of nature and is natural to every
individual. Rhythm is most clearly seen through dance- the art of movement

What is rhythm? is the regular recurrence of accented and unaccented beats.

Rhythms is a term which denotes an aspect of a quality of movement that is sometimes thought
of as dance. When an individua moves in response to a particular rhythm or music we call the
movements as rhythmic movements or rhythms. Structured forms which start creative rhythmic
movements are called rhythms.

Rhythmic activities are the physical manifestations of the mental and emotional response of the
individual to rhythm. They are activities which a child responds to physically, socially, and
mentally to regular patterns of sound.

They are also a source of enjoyment for people of all ages. Through these activities, skills
and the sense of rhythm are acquired and developed, feelings are expressed, basic principles of
time, space and force can be experienced.

Everyone reacts to music or rhythm in one form or another. A head swaying, a foot
tapping, fingers snapping, shoulders and body moving while a musical piece is played are
physical reactions.

Dance refers to movement set to music where there emerges organization, structure and pattern.
It is a composition that implies arrangement of parts into a form.

Dancing - is a means of expressing one’s emotions through movement disciplined by rhythm. It

is an act of moving rhythmically and expressively to an accompaniment. The word dancing came
from an old German word “ danson” which means to “ stretch”. Essentially, all dancing is made
up of stretching and relaxing.
Includes dance mixers, square dance round and couple dances. Many of these dances have
simple patterns and combinations of walking steps, polka step and the waltz step. The setting is
usually informal gatherings and parties, reunions etc.
Rhythm- Power of rhythm. Rhythm is a powerful force. It can regulate mood, ranging from the
arousing effect of pounding war drums to the pacifying effect of gently rocking a baby. It can
even induce altered states of consciousness, as in spiritual rituals and shamanic traditions
involving trance. Sometimes the dancing is infectious

Design in dance, choreography is the act of designing dance. Choreography may also refer to

the design itself, which is sometimes expressed by means of dance notation. A choreographer is one
who creates dances. Dance choreography is sometimes called dance composition. The art of
choreography involves the specification of human movement and form in terms of space, shape, time
and energy, typically within an emotional or non-literal context. Movement language is taken from
the dance techniques of ballet, contemporary dance, jazz dance, hip hop dance, folk dance, techno, k
pop, religious dance, pedestrian movement, or combinations of these.
Technique- correctly while performing, to executing skills properly in a routine. Strong
technique extends across all areas of dance, regardless of the style of your routine. Whether it’s
jazz, pom, hip hop, or kick, there is always an element of technique that can be improved upon.
So give your girls a much needed break from routine cleaning at practice, and work on their
technique for at least a half hour each time you meet! Below, you will find some helpful tips to
use with your teams at practice to improve their overall technique as dancers.
Dynamics- Dynamics are how the body is moving and this relates to speed, energy and flow of
movement. Dynamics add texture, color, interest and variety to a dance and can help to show
the dance idea, the mood or the atmosphere of a dance more clearly.
Gesture- A gesture is a form of non-verbal communication or non-vocal communication in
which visible bodily actions communicate particular messages, either in place of, or in
conjunction with, speech. Gestures include movement of the hands, face, or other parts of the
body. a movement or position of the hand, arm, body, head, or face that is expressive of an idea,
opinion, emotion.

Do you know these facts about dance?

*First archeological proof of dance comes from the 9 thousand year old cave paintings in India
The very first records of dancing are found in India and Egypt in c. 3300 BC, but it would be far-
fetched, even inaccurate, to say that Indians or Egyptians invented

*One of the earliest uses of structured dance was introduced in religious ceremonies that told
the stories of ancient myths and gods. Egyptian priests used this kind of visual storytelling in
their rituals.
The dance has always been with us, even before the arrival of written language and modern
history, when our earliest cultures evolved utilizing oral and performance methods to pass the
stories from one generation to the next. Many historians believe that social, celebratory and ritual
dances are one of the essential factors of the development of early human civilizations.

The earliest findings have pinpointed the origins of ancient dances in 9000-year-old India or
5300-year-old Egypt, but the records more common infusion of dance into a modern culture can
be found from Ancient Greece, China, and India. All these old dances evolved, eventually
morphing into a wide variety of Roman and European medieval dances, traditional Chinese
dances, Hindi and other traditional dances, respectively.

Dancing provides many great benefits and, while it's not possible to list them all, some of the
greater benefits are listed below:
1. Dancing allows one to express oneself.
Anyone observing a mother swaying around her house with her baby tucked safely in her
arms knows she is experiencing a moment of intense love for her baby while exercising a
tender embrace while caught up in the dance.
When a couple is dancing to a slow song and they look into each others' eyes and smile, it's
not difficult to realize they feel strong emotions for each other, regardless of whether it's love
or lust.
On another note, dance is an expression of art, in that it appeals to the emotions. For
example, a girl who pirouettes across a stage while performing ballet appears graceful and
elegant to many people, thus emotionally appealing.
A woman who dances slowly in the arms of a man she loves seems enchanted, which brings
happiness and, for some people, tears of joy.
2. A sense of unity is found within the dance.
Dancing provides physical/mental refreshment and relaxation.
Dancing helps bodies and minds relax as the music and surroundings take people away from
their anxiety and frustration for a while.
Mentally, they unwind and have fun, sharing a laugh or two. As their minds relax, their bodies
follow. Their muscles loosen up and tension and stress melt away.
3. Laughter and fun — dancing can provide a lot of entertainment.
A baby who giggles as his parents take turns dancing him around the house provides a source of
entertainment while bringing a sense of joy and peace to the home.
On another note, when people are laughing and trying to keep up with the moves involved in
line-dancing, they are being entertained. If they are new at line-dancing, they may be providing
entertainment for others. Their willingness to get on the floor and join in with the others,
regardless of whether they embarrass themselves, says a lot. They have lots of energy, spunk,
and determination, and they are willing to prove it on the dance floor.
4. Dancing is a form of exercise.
Dancing is a great form of aerobic exercise since it works many muscles in the body. Muscles
become stretched, conditioned, and toned while the heart rate increases, pumping blood at a
faster rate.
As bodies feel the benefit of a workout during the cool-down period, it's a good practice to have
a few moments to rest after dancing, especially if it was a fast dance.
Between dances, stretch out leg and arm muscles or, at the very least, sit in a chair and totally
relax while rolling the neck slowly around, and then in a slow back and forth motion to release
tension which may have built up in the back of the neck.
A great benefit of exercise is that afterward, there is often an improvement in a person's
disposition, so it's a win-win situation all the way around
